Black is often not seen as a colour because black absorbs all colours in the colour spectrum and therefore none of them are reflected back to your eyes. So when you see black your actually seeing no colours.

White however, should be a colour. This is because white doesn't absorb any of the colours it just reflects them back. Therefore when you see white your actually seeing every colour on the colour spectrum.

Those so called artists don't know what they are talking about,
Why would you go to the art store and ask for white or black and the sales person will go to the shelf of all colors and among all the other colors there sits black and white?

Easy answer:
Black and white are the 2 extremes of shades. In between (technically speaking) are all colors in all shades.

Black has no color at all (hence it isn't a color itself) and white is all color. So you could call white a color but somehow 'they' decided to not do that.

But then again: You can make the color black (in crayon or paint) so is sorta IS a color......

In art there are the elements of art, color and value being two of them Color incorporates some form of hue like yellow or blue. Value involves tints and shades. With colors, tints are values of that specific color with white added to it. For example, you have blue...add some white to it and you've got a lighter shade of blue, a tint of blue. Add some more white and you've got a new lighter tint of blue...and so on. Shades is the same thing, only with black. Add a little black to blue and you've got a shade of blue....and so on.

Long story short. Black and white are the two extremes of value, with an infinite selection of grays in between.

I hope i wasn't too confusing.
