i thought it was funny, i was on a plane going to spain and while listening to the flight safty briefing they said in case of an emergency, put on your oxygen mask and bend forward placing your head to your knees. why is that, if your going to crash from an altitude of 20000 feet, what is the point?

The smart-aleck answer when I was young, was "place your head between your legs and kiss your a$$ goodby!"

It was to preventserious neck, head and spine injuries. It reduces the risk of flying objects hitting you - plus reducing the risk of whiplah, or any injuries where you head and neck whip around or back and forth. the other danger is either you move too far forward andcrush your neck against the seatback in front; o you are too short, and the jar stretches your neck.

The preferred position nowadays (although they don't actually make you try it) seems to be bracing yourself by folding your arms on the setback in front of you, and resting your forehead on your arms. This also reduceswhiplash risk.

Jeff B is right, US carriers have eliminated that brief.
My opinion on passenger crash positioning is that crash preparation is simply something that the passengers can occupy themselves with while crashing. Doing something while crashing is always better than sitting there waiting to crash.

You are correct in thinking that this position would do nothing in an uncontrolled free-fall from 20,000 feet.
However, this 'crash position' is for a controlled emergency landing. It will protect your head and neck in the event of a 'hard' landing, turbulence, or an off-field landing.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but I believe all carriers in the USA have eliminated this procedure. And I believe some safety manuals actually tell you NOT to do that.

To protect your head and neck in case of an emergency landing..

By sittin' up you increase the chance of hurting your spine and neck..

Ok, now that I know the reason is to prevent flying object from hitting my head but then there is another problenm leaving my worries unresolved, that is, what happen if the landing impact is so great that I bang my head against the chair infront of me thus breaking my neck?

This is so that it would be easier to protect your head from things that may fly around. Now some smart a... may also say that it is to kiss your behind good bye. But really it's to protect your head.

It protects your head, so when the crash investigators are collecting all the bits of you they can identify you from your dental records.
