The existence of approximately 46 different species of sharks in the Mediterranean
- 16 of them measuring three or more meters in length,
- 15 being potentially dangerous species
- makes the occasional encounter between humans and these animals (0.42% annually) in the most frequented and most travelled sea unavoidable.
Although the Mediterranean barely makes up 0.7% of the world's total water surface, the amount of people seeking rest and relaxation there, in addition to those seeking to make a living, is enormous and in no way compares to its relative geographical surface area.

Here in New York we have the same sort of fish and sharks that are commonly found in he Mediterranean Sea. We have a fish called Sea Robin in New York, and it's found in the Mediterranean sea, although the fish is more pinkish over there it looks the same. Same story with sharks, we have sand tiger sharks off of Montauk, NY, on Long Island, and there are sand tiger sharks in the Mediterranean.
