Was thinking about a simple portrait, with some writing underneath. Any other ideas are welcome though.

Think of three words that describe him...fun, strong, caring...love, hope, joy...something like that...I'm not big on portrait tattoos...I think they are a bit morbid, but if that is how you want to honor your brother, then peace. I'm terribly sorry for your loss.

I only have one word of advice if you do decide to get a portrait done of him... Check your tattoo artists' portfolio and make SURE he/she knows what they're doing as far as portraits go. I've seen many great tattoo artists do terrible portraits and it's on you for life.
You could also do an old school scroll or banner style tattoo with his name and the year/months he was born and passed or maybe a banner under an object that represents him or something he loved.

g'day I had a tattoo done three months ago for my mum that passed in 96. It is a purple rose with her initials and her birth date and day of passing. Purple was her favourite colour and she loved rose's and was buried in a rose garden. Think of your brothers favourite colour and toy/thing if he liked blue and cars, get a blue car and his name and dates. when the time is right you'll now what to get. It took me ten years lol.

I'm so sorry for your loss...
I think portrait tats are a beautiful way to memorialize a loved one. But it doesn't always have to be a serious pic...choose your favorite pic of him...one that makes you laugh, or just smile when you think of him. Did he have a favorite color, sport, etc? You could incorporate those things in too.

You could do a portrait done with no color, like a black and grey shading type thing, and then to keep it simple do like his date of birth and passing maybe? Just thoughts. This is definitely something personal that you need to choose.

potraits arent often that good cos your skin will stretch and move as you get older - bold letters are best - maybe his name written somewhere where people can see in bold letters or maybe letters in a different language like chinese so it's pretty.

depending on how old he was, you can have his signature on your arm. That's what my sister-in-law did when my brother died. But he was 33 years old.

something with initials or his name n a quote or something is much classier than a full on portrait
