This is a practice as old as time and it is pagan in origin, primitive peoples did this as they thought that the Sun was God and worshipped it as such, those who do this still are simply linking themselves to these primitive peoples.

"At rest, however, in the middle of everything is the sun. For, in this most beautiful temple, who would place this lamp in another or better position than that from which it can light up the whole thing at the same time? For, the sun is not inappropriately called by some people the lantern of the universe, its mind by others, and its ruler by still others. The Thrice Greatest labels it a visible god, and Sophocles' Electra, the all-seeing. Thus indeed, as though seated on a royal throne, the sun governs the family of planets revolving around it."

Sun worship is an age old ritual well prevailed in the old world, Egyptians, Sumerians, Incas, Mayans, Aryans, Dravidians civilizations speak in volumes of this traditional form of worships.
It is said that "if we want to know the power of sun, we have to ask about it with a farmer". It is no doubt that Sun is one of the key elements needed for life, India is an agrarian country hence local hindus consider sun venerably as a manifestation of one of the hindu trinity ( vishnu ).
Worshipping sun is one of their form or token in offering their respects. Indians even to this day worship it dually by performing a pooja(prayer ritual) or suryanamaskaram ( physical exercise).

The sun, or the 'Son behind the sun', is the real Creator and Sustainer of the Light and of Life. If there's any god that deserves worship within the Universe, then it's the spiritual aspect of the sun, despite what xtian ignoramuses might say...

Sorry to be asking, but what are Jains? Are they protestant or pagans?
Well, anyway, people who pray to the sun are called animists. They believe that the Sun is a god. Even Aztecs, Mayans and the Egyptians worshiped the Sun. Perhaps, their basis is that the Sun is a ball of fire and it is "moving from east to west" and suddenly disappears at night. They find these to be signs of a miracle.

It stems from a culture of polytheism, whereby a belief is held that each aspect of nature (eg, sun, wind, water, etc) has a personal deity in control. By worshiping one particular deity we can attain a specific benediction. In the case of worshiping the sun the worshiper can obtain increased bodily health and well-being. The understanding is also there that above all the individual deities is one Supreme God, who goes by different names in different cultures.

The Sun is a good god to pray to.

First of all, you can actually SEE him.
Secondly, he's very reliable.
Thirdly, he gives us light and warmth, so he's very generous and has an undeniable impact on our daily lives.

Some people take the Sun for granted.
Those heretics wouldn't know what to do if it failed them!

You mean there is actually a sun. make a change to see it. It"s freezing here, and it"s supposed to be summer! Nothing but rain, storms and flooding for weeks now. Good old England.
