So the legend goes, he shot a man 1.42 miles away with a scoped Browning M2 .50 machine gun. He rigged it to be semi-automattic. Since no rifle of that caliber existed in that time, he had to use the M2. He is also famed with shooting an enemy sniper throught his his scope and then eye. ("Saving Private Ryan" pays homage to this feat).

This record was beaten by Canadian Corporal Rob Furlong in Afghanistan during Operation Anaconda in 2002. He killed a Taliban fighter from 2430 (1.509 miles) meters away with a McMillan TAC-50 rifle (.50 caliber as well). This record currently stands as the longest documented sniper kill ever.

I doubt if the two can be compared, Hathcock was using a 50 Cal machine gun with one round in the breech and a sniper scope fixed to it a ad-hoc improvised weapon, whereas the snipers in Iraq and Afganistan are using purpose built 50 cal weapons.

Are you talking about the shot through the sniper scope?

If I am not mistaken he was also the sniper who shoot out the handle bars of a moving bicycle at like 100 yards. right?

How about the British Army Rifleman who over an open sight, repeatedly hits a moving target at 1000 + yards. No Telescopic!!

To my knowledge, its never been equaled?

It is quite possible, yes. Gunny Hathcock was the finest sniper the US has ever seen, and we will always cherish his heroism. But records are made to be broken. New heroes will emerge.
