A penpal is a person with whom you exchange letters or e-mails. Most of the time you choose a person from another country. It is supposed to benefit the greater understanding in between people.
I don't know in which language you want to translate it. In french it would be "correspondant", in german "Brieffreund" or "Brieffreundin" if it is a girl, in dutch it would be "pennenvriend".

try pen friends - it means being friend with somebody you don't know in person (at least at the beginning) but only from exchanging letters.
It also happened that you got penpals with someone whom you met on a holiday and exchanged addresses.
Having penpals was quite popular with younger people even before internet days - maybe today it would be better to call them keyboad pals

Someone you write letters with, usually to improve a foreign language.
Nowadays, e-mail friends fall also under this category.
