I like "newish" music (ex: the black-eyed peas, the pussycat dolls, rihanna, fergie, etc.) but my mom, dad, sister, grandparent and stuff don't. I mean i can understand why, i'm 6 years younger than my sisters but i'm still old enough. I know they would hate anything other than mary poppins going into my brain so i listen to music on my laptop in the dead of night, otherwise i'm stuck with stuiped hyms that we heard in church on Sunday. I'm fed up with staying up until 4 to hear some decent stuff, any advice on how to break it to mom that i'm not 2 and we're not living a million years ago? I mean i don't want her to hate me and think i'm a putrid piece of **** but i want to be able to have a little pleasure when i'm not about to conk out. I mean i love my parents, they're the best ever! they just don't get all the new stuff going on, that frills, stripes, and bonnets are out of style, know what i mean? and the black eyed peas aren't exactly clean but whatever, my teachers cuss more! HELP!

you got a serious attitude problem. your parents make rules for a reason and you need to listen to them, instead of going over the top in describing them to strangers

Just part of growing up; every generation goes through it. You will survive, but you'll have to respect your parents and keep your music to yourself. Maybe ask for an mp3 or whatever so you can listen to your stuff without them having to endure what they consider garbage.
My 16-yr-old son has actually negotiated with me enough in the past couple years to the point that I broke down and started to listen to some of his music, and have come to even like a lot of it. At least now, when we drive down the road together, we compromise and listen to a great mix of what we both like or can endure. The relationship we have is way more important than what's playing on the radio.

I don't like my daughter's music, so I bought her an ipod, with earphones.
But she does make me laugh. Surely she's the only kid in the world who can sing to the Eagles, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Nina Simone, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Janis Joplin. And she must be the only 15-year old in the world who knows who Mud and The Sweet are.
It's about compromise. Talk to your mum. Tell her you know the language isn't always apropriate, but you love the music.
If you've got a birthday coming up, choose cd's you lke, that you know aren't too bad and ask for them.

Ask her if she ever liked something her parents thought she just shouldn't and ask her if she hid anything from them. WHen she says yes then tell her you feel the same way about music as she did about whatever she tells you about. Ask her for her the understanding she would have apprieciated from her parents .

Just listen to it on your own time in your own space. I hear you and use to have to listen to my music in secret. When my mom was not around and when it was low on my front porch. I was not a big deal, but when I turned 18 and moved out, I played my music LOUD and she couldnt say anything. It was great.

You are free to listen to whatever music express you and gives you pleasure. I like this music too and my parents were not really happy to notice it however they accept my right to choose my interests and tastes. Walkmans are a really good idea but you can also try talk to your parents and persuade them that you are still their" good" sweet child but you have the right to choose what you want. Music is harmless they should see that. Good luck !!!!

I think your parents should allow you some time to enjoy music of your choosing. That is mutually agreed upon. they should realize that being too strict can backfire horribly. try talking again and again if necessary.
