well, we've decided to send mom and dad to nyc for their annvrsry, i think they will love it.

The Statue of lib....theyre gonna be there for just 3 days and dont want them to be in long lines when they could be doing other things...should they do the Staten I Ferry and skip the St of Lib and Ellis..?

But.. i've read that Ellis Islnd and its museum are great, emotional,etc... so if Ellis is a 'must see', I'll tell them to do the Statue n' Ellis ferry not the Staten Ferry..

So, looking for advice..from new yorkers and those who've been to Ellis I ...thanks

As a native, i would say NOT to waste time to go to see the Statue, but rather take the FREE Staten Island Ferry that goes past it..allows very good photo ops. if you have a decent camera.

If your parents want to get in touch with their immigrant past, they could also try visiting the Immigrants Muesum located somewhere in the Lower East Side. I've never been to that one yet, but i hear its very powerful and educational and having located in the heart of the oldest immigrant neighborhood in NYC is something even more worthy of attention

Also mention to them to check out the Cloisters in upper manhattan. beautiful miedeval architecture (recreated) as well as artwork. Its an extension of the Metropolitan Muesum and was built on the property of a very wealthy manhattanite back in the early 20th century. Whats great about it is its located on top of "mountain" that has a lot of history about the american revolution regarding nyc and the british. it also is located within Ft. Tryon Park, which offers amazing views of the palisades, the hudson river and also provides scenic resting spots and a well kept heather garden for strolling.

To get there, take the Uptown A-Train to 190th street. Then take the elevator in the stage to the top.

First of all The Staten Island Ferry runs 24/7 and to many a NY couple it's the Love Boat. Have your folks take a late-night after dinner cruise on it and then walk / take a cab up to Mulberry St and sit outside enjoying some Italian pastries & drinking espresso.
The Statue of Liberty on the other hand must be done in the day.
Personally because of the extremely limited access to the Statue proper I would not get off the ferry when it docks at Liberty Island.
I would stay on the ferry and spend some time at Ellis Island. Many of the tenenment buildings that they will see pictures of at Ellis Island are still around .It is very possible that they will be drinking espresso in the shadow of one.
The secret to doing NYC in a short period of time is to not do the things that can be done at night during the day i.e Empire State Building.
Their basic strategy should be :
Do the daytime stuff,
Go back to the hotel take a nap for a couple of hours,
Go out for dinner and then find other things to do-
Repeat
NYC

We were there for 10 days and still didn't see all we had planned. You are right you can spend all morning in line or take the Staten Ferry like we did and still from a distance see the Statue of Liberty and get some amazing pictures of the Statue and the New York Coast Line. We enjoyed the ride and all the different surroundings along with all our pictures! So much to see and so little time!!! A Broadway show is a must! Tell them in Manhattan go beside the Bank of America (off time square) and buy discount tickets the day of show for around 30.00! Good deal if you know where to go. Lots of people standing around this ticket area down from the bank can't miss it. Enjoy

Statue of Liberty trip is a must. you should not worry about the lines. It is a great experience. And yes Ellis Island is another gem to see.
Then when you get back to Battery Park it is a short walk to the SI Ferry. Free and get on and have a beer or soda and enjoy a second trip.

the income of the Staten Island Ferry is that that's a hundred% unfastened -- you basically walk up and get on, do no longer could desire to pay a dime. You get super perspectives of the Statue of Liberty, manhattan Harbor, and the decrease long island, Brooklyn, and Jersey city skylines. regardless of the shown fact that, it does not extremely end on the Statue of Liberty -- is going a pair of quarter mile remote from it. you will could desire to take a seperate (paid) ferry to extremely get on the Island.

Ellis Island is a lot shorter wait. You basically walk around the great halls. Quite impressive. Statute of Liberty long lines, not worth it. Seeing it afar is impressive enough.
