Or does the punching glove and mitts protect boxers/kickboxers from this kind of trauma to the joints and wrists?

This problem usually corresponds to the person using the proper training equipment under the watchful eye of a good coach. Some cheap bags that you can buy are to hard or to soft and to small in circumference. All this can cause hand and wrist problems over long use especially if they are not tapping their wrists, wrapping their hands, and using a good set of bag gloves. The water bags that are out now are very good (if you buy one larger in circumference).

Most tile and wood breakers that have hand problems have them because they did not spend the proper time exercising their hands and hardening and toughening them and were not taught properly about breaking.

Absolutely!!! That plus detached retinas (Sugar Ray Leonard) and Parkinsons (Mohammad Ali) . Ask Jeff Fenech, Australian former World Champion in two weight divisions. Part of the reason he quit was his hands were F--ked.
