Yes, if the combat was fought to defend the Pope.

The Swiss Guard serve with this vow:

I swear I will faithfully, loyally and honourably serve the Supreme Pontiff Benedict XVI and his legitimate successors, and also dedicate myself to them with all my strength, sacrificing if necessary also my life to defend them.

With love in Christ.

The Vatican does not have a standing army, and is protected by the nation of Italy by treaty since the days of the Holy Roman Empire. The Pope is the Vicor of Christ, and has no military power.. The Swiss Guard only serves as bodyguards to the Pope and provides security to Vatican personnel.

Actually, he's the Pope. He is the head of the Catholic Church. By Papal Authority he could order every Catholic to war and those that refused could be excommunicated. Would he? Probably not.

Personally, I'm not Catholic, but I'm pretty sure practicing Catholics don't really have a choice in whether or not they follow the Pope's edicts. Either they respect Papal authority and do, or they don't and so they're really not Catholics.

Catholics believe that papal authority began with the disciple Peter. Jesus gave Peter original papal authority by saying "as it is on earth, so shall it be in heaven." So, according to Catholicism, an order from the Pope is the same as an order from Christ. Obedience isn't an option.
