I am a former Mensan, and the subject of “Genius” always got a ton of laughs at the meetings. I have two favorite quotes, one comical and one “wise”.

The first is from Scott Adams’ cartoon “Dilbert”. A co-worker asks Dilbert “You seem like a bright fellow. Have you considered joining MENSA?” To which Dilbert queries, “Is that the group with genius IQs?” The co-worker replies “Precisely correct. I’m the president of the local chapter.” The final frame has Dilbert asking “If we’re so smart, why do we work here?” and the co-worker replies “Intelligence has much less practical application than you’d think."

The second is by Alexander Pope, containing a frequently MIS-quoted line from a verse in “An Essay on Criticism”.

A little Learning is a dang'rous Thing;
Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian Spring:
There shallow Draughts intoxicate the Brain,
And drinking largely sobers us again.

Sometimes men come by the name of genius in the same way that certain insects come by the name of centipede - not because they have a hundred feet, but because most people can't count above fourteen.
