You could try a beagle.. or a pitbull, or a heeler... or a basset hound... or a bulldog... they look mean, but are one of the sweetest dogs...

If you are looking for a short haired dog of small stature then you need to look into Rat Terriers, chiuauas, Jack Russell Terriers, Basset Hounds or Beagles. I think the largest of the breeds I named is the Beagle. The others are small and have very short coats. While a labradoodle is cute they can grow bigger than expected and some are allergic to their fur. I would suggest trying some contact with some dogs from a pound or kennel to see which you are allergic to and then avoid those dogs as house mates. Most Rat Terriers, Jacks and Chis don't shed much at all. I have a pit bull mix and he does shed a bit, but my rat didn't shed that much and chi's don't shed at all. At least that is what I'm told. I found that most dogs do shed some just not a lot. You might want to check into the teacup size. Or the toy breeds.

What about a Maltese?
Or you can consider any smaller breed that has wire hair, i.e. fox terriers, dachshunds, yorkies, etc.
I love chihuahuas, but they do shed a lot, so are smooth and long hair dachshunds, beagles, and the others mentioned in previous answers.
You could get a labradoodle of medium size if you can find one where the mama is a lab, and the dad is a toy poodle.

There are no truly hypoallergenic breeds, but there are some dogs which people don't get as much of a reaction from them.
How about an Italian Greyhound? They are smallish in size, and they don't shed much. They are very gentle in nature.
Stay away from the designer "breeds" such as Labradoodles. They do shed, and this is one of the reasons why many are dumped in shelters.

Some of the dogs considered "hypo-allergenic" (although no dog is, completely) are Schnauzers, Maltese, Poodles, and Bichons. It's usually not the hair, but the dander, but dogs that don't shed as much seem to also put less dander in the air. A lot of terriers are non-shedding as well. The thing about that is that the ones that don't shed much need to be kept trimmed - and that means professional grooming unless you learn to do it yourself. Beagles shed a lot.

How about a peekapoo. It's half poodle and half pekinese. They are calm like a pekinese but are shed free and have short hair like a poodle. There are also blue terriers. They are not easy to find but they don't have dander (which is what people are allergic to actually when it comes to dogs and/or cats) and they don't need trimmed as much as poodles do.

Miniature Poodles are really good pets. They are pretty much hypo allergenic, they don't shed, they are loyal and playful. My mom had one for seventeen years and he was a really good pet. Low maintenance. I Had a Pomeranian for several years and she was a wonderful dog. I know they're long haired but she never shed. She was extremely friendly , playful, and fairly low maintenance. The little dogs do tend to lose their teeth so you have to watch for that.

I have a Dachshund. She's seriously the best dog I've owned! She's very smart, obedient, and affectionate. She loves all my little nieces and my nephew, but still a good guard dog when it comes to strangers! This might be a good choice for you.

Consider the soft coated wheaten terrier, they need hair cuts but they are hypoallergetic. They are high energy and be very careful with the breeding history because they can be nuts if not raised and bred properly.
