I don't think He punishes us, why do you say that?
I mean, stuff happens in everyday life. Bad stuff too. But it's just part of living, part of life and just the way it is.
You should try and not sin and live as Jesus would have, just do your best. That's all He asks for.

You don't want to be told none of it is real so I'll pretend that it is for the time being.
God is perfect according to Jesus and the rest of the Bible. God knows past, present, and future. He knew man would sin. He did not make made perfect. He could have given man the ability to resist temptation. God created you this way and then punished you for the short comings he bestowed upon you. He created the entire universe including the diseases that kill innocent children. Children that are born ill and die a slow painful death. Those children get a free pass to heaven. Where they will spend eternity worshipping their own murderer. Therefore the only logical conclusion an intelligent person can come to is God is an evil being. He likes to punish and cause suffering. He created you so that he could watch you suffer.
You are asking this question because it does not make sense to you. You are looking for some delusional excuse for what God does. Every religious person spends more time making excuses for God than anything else. This happens because if you really read the Bible you will see it does not make sense. Therefore in order for your mind to entertain the idea of God you have to make delusional rationalizations for God.

when a child reaches for a hot stove, you quickly correct him with probably a shout and maybe a slapping of his hand away because you love him and want him to learn not stay away from things that will hurt him. Kids from homes without discipline are often the most miserable of them all. Boundaries and discipline are a sign that we are loved. God punishes those he loves. Usually what we face are the natural consequences for our sins- in which case your question could be rephrased "why doesn't God intervene supernaturally to help me avoid the consequences for my sin".

Our sinning isn't innocent. We do it on purpose all the time. And when it's not consciously on purpose it's the result of sinful thought patterns that shouldn't have been built up. Sin is never free of guilt.
Also, God's punishing us means that we're cut off from him, right? That's a necessary result of being unsaved; God is perfect, and we can't be united with him if we're flawed. Perfection cannot be made up of imperfection, the two are like oil and water, they can't mix. So, if we're unsaved and therefore still imperfect when we die, if we can't be united with God, the default happens; we are cut off from Him. That state of being is what we call Hell.

God knows your limits and what you are capable of. He does not put you up to a standard with Jesus of course, that is why when we do something bad, we can count on being forgiven through Jesus if we are really sorry about it. God does not punish us per say, but our prayers are likely not to be acted upon until we correct our standing with our heavenly father.

I thought about it a little when I saw your question... and I do not feel that God punishes us at all. I feel that He guides us in the right direction by setting obstacles and teaching us to make choices on our own. He is never cruel and does not hurt us, but teaches us lessons instead. He accepts all of our mistakes, remember that. He always forgives because he knows that we will all sin.

If you are a Christian, your sin results in chastisement and rebuking to bring you into line with what you know to be true from the Word. Your 'punishment' is temporary like a father disciplining his son.
If you are not, your life experience may seem like punishment but it is just a taste of the eternal 'punishment' to come.
Repent either way & be restored to a right relationship with Him

Just as our parents punished us for doing something wrong we learned from our mistakes and the punishment. We remember what we did wrong and the consequences from the punishment. Plus Jesus loves us so much He corrects us so we won't hurt ourselves again(some times He can slap us upside down and were still so hard headed we don't pay attention)

God knows his own, and like any father he will punish his own, in order to save them. I used to punish my children if they went near the fire, just a small tap on the hand. Because I knew how painful a burn could be , the children didnt. If God punishes you it is for your own good.

God is not punishing us. That is the reason why He sent Christ. To redeem us of those very sins we cannot help but to commit. If anyone understands our spiritual condition, it's God. Why do you think Christ is such a gift?
