My Mom's cat of 10 years pees on everything in the house. The whole has is saturated and really stinks.(luckily I don't live there) My Mom has tried putting the cat on anti-depressants per the vets instructions but the cat will literally keep the pill in her mouth and not swallow it. My sister and I have tried to get my mom to keep the cat in the basement with the door shut, litterbox food etc so she learns where to pee and that it is not ok to pee all over the house. But my mom always caves in to the cat's crying and lets her back intoe the rest of the house after an hour. This has gone on for years, the cat has no discipline. To make matters worse, besides her problem, she just is not a very nice cat, she bites, hisses, claws at people who are not my Mom. My mom wants to put her house on the market, but in its current state peope will wlak rigth out bc of the smell. Anything that has worked for really poorly behaved kitties besides euthanization? She has no medical problems.

It is unusual for a cat to urinate completely outside of a litter box, perhaps it started with the cat contracting a bladder infection, then, when in the litterbox, she learned to associate pain with it, and since then has decided that the litterbox hurts, and the rest of the house doesn't. If your mom really wants to sell the house, she will definitely have to get people in to professionally clean. Another thing is that as everyone has mentioned, cat pee is pervasive, if the cat comes into the home and smells where it previously peed, it will use the same spot, even if it's been quite well cleaned. I would suggest to your mom that she puts the cat in a cattery for around a month. In this time, she can get the house cleaned properly, and settle into her new home. If she speaks with the people at the cattery she can let them know what her behavioural problems are, and they can assist in re-potty training the cat. The benefit here is that the cat has a small run, with the litterbox in one corner, which should help her realise where she needs to go. You may also have to go through a few different types of products as well. Some cats hate the large granuals of cat-sand. Some may be comfortable using sand from outside, in which case, you can start them off on that, and slowly mix cat sand into it, till it's all catsand. The benefit of boarding her is that your mom won't be able to 'give in' and let the cat do what it wants! I hope this solution works. It may be a bit pricey to board kitty, but with the sale of the house your mom should have a bit of cash coming in. When she's in the new place, kitty should ONLY be allowed to be in the bathroom for the first week. As long as there is a basket, and cat tray and food, it will give her a chance to get used to one area of the new place, while your mom can monitor her use of the litterbox. Once she's happy, she can be allowed in the rest of the house during the day, but sleep in the bathroom still. Eventually she can be in the rest of the house for good. The cat will probably never become too friendly to others - but that is not such an awful thing, THE PEEING IS!

The cat is 10 and have been peeing in the house all this time. Well, it is NOT going to be litter trained now!
This sounds like a horrid cat although I appreciate that your mom loves it. However, the house will not sell stinking of cat ****.
Can you relocate your Mom (with or without the cat) to where ever it is that she wants to go, and then have some really professional cleaners come in and see what they can do. I can tell you though...cat urine is pervasive.

This is your mom's problem. I know all you're doing is trying to help. You mom has lived with this cat and it's behavior for 10 yrs. now. That in it's self is hard for me to compute. And now your mom is thinking about selling her house. She better prepare herself with a lot of elbow grease. What she'll probably have to do, in order to sell her home. is hire a cleaning service and then she better start hopeing that will work. If she has carpeting, it will have to go. After ten years there's no way the carpetiing can be disinfected. She'll have to pay out before she gets paid.
It always amazes me what people will put up with. I don't want to sound so negative about your mom. No one's perfect. You have tryed to tell her for years that something has to be done about her cat. The cat has taken over the house 10 yrs. ago. Trying to discipline the cat now would be a no win situation. It's you mom's cat and she has to take care of her own responsibilities.
I was given a kitten years ago when I had my own grown cat. When the cat (named it Dameon) got older she had the came personality as your mom's cat. I put up with this for five yrs (way too long). I had to have her uthenized. I could'n allow anyone else to have her because of her behavor.

Toss the cat outside for several weeks. Cats prefer to potty outside. The problem is that since it has already gone in the house the smell is there. You would have to replace all the carpet and padding, and possibly even repair some of the drywall around the floor. I would leave the cat outside for good.

Some cats will refuse to use a litter box if there is anything in it..so keep that clean..
Also is she spayed? If not that might be the cause of it to.
And also if she is left alone a lot it could be something she does cuz she is lonely and getting back at (I guess your mom) for not spending time with her..
Does she have her needles all up to date?
Sometimes as they get older they can develope strange ways.. especially if they seem stressed..
Check out this list and see if its any of them..If not
ask your vet for advice..
Good Luck..

our cat when we got our dog decided that she was going to get revenge on us by peeing on the sofa downstairs in the living room. she had no problems prior to us getting a dog but there is this spray on the market, i forgot what it was called, but it repels cats from peeing. you can even get some that keep cats out of certain rooms. it worked for us and she has not peed there since. Ask your local vet what it is called. And get yourself a steam cleaner. good luck

Ask the vet for the same anti-depressant, but in a trans-dermal formulation. With TD's you just smear it in the cats ear and it gets absorbed into the bloodstream that way. Don't forget to wear gloves though!
