I can't afford to buy my fiance the hammered finish ring he prefers right now, so I was considering buying a plain ring and having a hammered finish added later. Does anyone know if this is possible?
Please, no obnoxious answers about taking a hammer to the ring myself.

I would just ask a jeweler at the jewelry store - they are the experts and can give you the best advice.

The best thing to do is explain to the jeweler your money situation and what you want. You might be surprised at what they can get for you if you just ask. All of their stock isn't out. They may just put out the higher dollar items but can order something that is similar at a lower cost. They also have financiing programs. My husband's ring is the hammered look and we both loved it immediately. It was around $300 I think.

You can't change the finish like that, as it's not any sort of overlay, but make like that from the mold. Some jewelers can make it a brushed finished, but the hammered can't be redone. If money is tight, but you want something with a finish you can look at less expensive options - 10k instead of 14k gold, or silver. A brushed finished also looks nice too and normally doesn't cost more than a plain band. A local jeweler can help you find less expensive options that do not cost as much.

about the hammering part i am unsure of. However I know you can get ur rings changed from yellow gold to white gold vicer versa. I just bought my fiance his wedding band its pladium (its platnum and titanium) and they dont run that expensive. Also if he wants the hammered look, look at titanium rings you can usually get those for aroun 150-200 and many of them are unique and may have a hammered look.

i don't think that's probably a good idea. i think the metal is poured into a mold and not actually hammered.
