I asked this question before & people were telling me that they don't believe I'm telling the whole story, but yes, this IS the whole story. I suffer Tourette's Syndrome, & when I was a senior in high school, my foster mom punished me from going to my senior prom, just because of my tics. Isn't that cruel to make a child miss PROM because of that?

this is a sore subject for me. my oldest has a disability and a cousin was born blind. a disability is not something to be punished. i don't care WHAT it is. to punish the disabled child is saying you are broken, you need fixed. these children do not need fixed. they need love. your foster mom was wrong! i hope you live somewhere else now.

Yes, it is definitely a cruel thing to do. I believe you because I have seen first hand how some foster parents have treated children in their care. Some are in it just for the monthly checks they recieve from the government and really couldn't care less about the child. I'm sorry that you had to miss your prom. The best thing that you can do is to rise above this and be a better person than your foster mom. No one should ever be punished because of their disability. It's not like you asked to have Tourette's. I wish you the best in life!

I believe you hun and I have to say that is very cruel.

Speaking from personal experiences, I know the foster care system is not all it's cracked up to be.

If anything, she should have been very supportive of you going, and should have found ways for you be strong regardless of whether you have Tourette's or not.

I'm sorry that you had to go through this.
Just realize that you are a strong person, and that sometimes - people are idiots.

That's horrible! Was she made aware of all the signs and symptoms of Tourette's? My guess is she was, and if she couldn't handle it then she shouldn't have been allowed to be your foster parent. I'm sure your classmates and teachers were used to your tics and it shouldn't have bothered them if you were at prom so I don't understand why your foster mom refused to let you go. She is just a cruel woman I guess.

Yes, yes, yes very cruel. Doesn't stress from being criticized make the symptoms of T.S. worse? Your foster mom was horrible and obviously completely uneducated on your disability.

One word comes to mind.... DISGUSTING!!

Why would your mother punish you because of your Tourette's Syndrome? Did she punish you for more than just going to your prom? Don't tell me she smacked you around for stupid little mistakes related to your syndrome.

My guess is she firmly believes in spanking, that disability is no excuse definitely, therefore she made an entirely uneducated and uninformed decision to spank you, based upon what you are able to learn. Parents like this make me ill.

If you are still in school, I suggest you tell your guidance counselor what is going on. Or confide in a trusted adult, or parent of a friend. Surely, they will intervene on your behalf. This definitely sounds like a case for Social Services.

I believe you, cause some time the foster parents can be mean, and don't give a damn about the kids that they are taking care of. She was just being very hateful because she know she could.

yes it is. i think your foster mom might have been afraid that you would get made fun of and it would ruin your night, she may have thought she was protecting you but she was doing it the wrong way. she should have let you go, and if someone did hurt your feeling then she should have just waited for you to come home and been there to comfort you and help you cope.

Kind of. Yes, actually, I think it is..unless you physically did something wrong, that had nothing to do with your disease then I could see why, but just because of that? Thats pretty mean. Im sorry.
