I was in Wal-Mart today and there was this older guy that had on his Vietnam veteran hat. So, the cashier asks the guy how long he fought in the war and so forth and the guy behind him says something to the effect of "that war was a crock we had no bussiness being their it reminds me a lot of the war that those assholes (referring to the troops) are fighting right now." I do not support the war in Iraq I have been against it from the very begining but stop the madness. These men and women were willing to risk their lives for his sorry ***. Leave their families, their children behind knowing that they may never return. And he doesnt even appreciate it. You dont have to agree with the war but you can give them moral support, for crying out loud. I had to get that off my chest because its been irking me all day.

Towanda- I believe you misunderstood my statements. The Veitnam vet didnt say all of this. The guy behind him said all of this. And I am a history major, so it was before I was born, but I know a thing or two about it.

Look, I am not here to debate the merit of the war. My questions why do some people who dont support the war refuse to support the troops as well. Whether we had reason to go to Iraq is a whole nother question thats not to be answered here.

My hubby IS a soldier, and I oppose the war. Knowing everyday that he might be sent back over there to fight a war that should never have happened just breaks my heart. What people fail to realize is that being in the Army doesn't mean you support what our government tells you to do. You have to go whether you agree or not. As for the ignorant people who think my husband chooses to fight a war that neither he or I believe in, why don't you read up on the policies of the Army. They send you where they want you, regardless of what you want. These people should be happy to have soldiers willing to go against what they feel because one day a war might break out that actually needs to be fought and these will be the people who fight it for us. If you don't like the war, go talk to your president and leave my hubby alone, he's doing his job so he can feed his family.

You don't understand why all of that was said. I think everyone now supports the troops that are fighting for us in Iraq, Afganistan, whereever they are now and whether or not they support the war. But when Vietnam happened, it was not a popular war and there are great similarities between the two-like a war we cannot win, where we are not wanted, where it's hard to tell your friend from your enemy and on and on. One big difference is that the troops were not supported then. Those that fought were not popular, received no homecoming or support from anyone including the government. Back during Vietnam if you said you supported the troops everyone tried to say you supported the war. People refused to differentiate between the two. It was a horrible time to be a vet. To go through all of that and come home to nothing. . .Check out the old Rambo movies and how he was treated as a vet. It's a movie but the basis of it is true. No one cared about the vets and noone cared whether they came home or not. The assholes he was referring to are President Bush and his band of renowns that keep us fighting a war we will probably never win-much like Vietnam. Vietnam was a crock. You are aware that a war is good for our economy and that was the gist of Vietnam. So many died for nothing and got no thanks for it. The guys you are talking about are veterans that fought for our country-probably before you were born. They deserve our respect as much as the soldiers of today. Maybe more because they didn't get theirs back then. I assure you that they meant no harm and no disrespect to our soldiers fighting today. They have been there and done that and understand what it takes to do what our soldiers are doing today.

I don't think the guy in line was necessarily criticizing the men who fought in Viet Nam, nor the men and women who are serving in Iraq. He was stating the truth about the reasons that the wars were started.

A lot of Viet Nam vets talk about the stupidity of that war. Some of them tell me that my sons should not go to Iraq because they know from experience that both wars were and are based on lies. I stood on the corner of a street in my town with Viet Nam vets who were demonstrating against Iraq. They and I support the troops that are there, but not the war itself. It's not an either or situation.

Well ... I believe you that he might have been a hate monger. I respect your question, and that would be hard to listen to. It's a sensitive issue.

This country is about 85% coward! They feel its ok that bombings, and killings are going on eslewhere and not here. They have no heart for our country doing the right thing in taking Saddam out. Fact is Clinton could have done it any time in the 8 years when Saddam broke15/16 resolutions in the cease fire treaty! Didn't have to go to the house, senate or U.N. for approval. Instead this do nothing president chose to let Saddam gas and kill 1.5 million kurds! This no nothing president also chose not to lift a finger in Bosnia, until 100's of thousands were killed. and that was mainly woman and children! Iraq is the absolute best place for us to be, as we need to control that part of the world. If we lose and it WILL BE because of the Democrats, They will bring us to our knee's with higher and higher oil prices!! That is the game the middle east, Mexico, and Venezula are playing right now. They are all in cahoots setting the price and making us pay! Thanks to the Democrats and shutting down drilling and building refineries we are where we are today! We need to support all of the men and woman who are fighting for our survival! We definely needed to go into iraq, and the timing was off by 8/10 years. Fact is we had a coward as a president in clinton. Now Bush has had to do the dirty work! You all better get off your bush lied people died routine, because that isnt going to win this thing.

I do not support the war. But I donate to the USO. I respect and honor the soldiers. I would never show such disrespect.

I think the best thing we can do to show our support for the troops is to get them OUT of Iraq and stop forcing them to fight this senseless war.

Thankyou for understanding the importance of caring for our men and woman. I'm tossed between keeping them there and taking them home. I see why we should stay and I see why we should go home. I don't see it as a sensless war, I see it as a sensless president who botched the whole thing up to begin with. And I'm sure there were mistakes made on the military side as well, but I don't know this for fact. All i do know is my husband fights for his country and everyone that is in it. And I am proud of him for doing so. We have 2 young kids and he has been away from them for 8 months now and has 5 more to go....we make sacrifice after sacrifice to honor our country and protect those who need to be protected. (foreign or domestic) That is their job. I support my husband in every way and think its a disgrace to hear about people still disrespecting our veterans for wars they fought as boys...its shameful and it makes me very upset. Thankyou for bringing it to our attention.

The point of public relations slogans like "Support our troops" is that they don't mean anything. They mean as much as whether you support the people in Iowa. Of course, there was an issue. The issue was, Do you support our policy? (U.S. MILITARY OCCUPATION OF IRAQ) But you don't want people to think about the issue. That's the whole point of good propaganda. You want to create a slogan that nobody's going to be against, and everybody's going to be for, because nobody knows what it means, because it doesn't mean anything, but its crucial value is that it diverts your attention....

He is a minority - and an idiot. I disagree with this war whole-heartedly about the war, but there is no way anyone should not support the troops in the war. This was an idiot move by bush, but the troops are heroes and should be treated as such.

We can. It's just a spin the right wing puts on it to make it look like anyone but republicans are unpatriotic and don't care about the country.

I'm sure there are some people that don't support both, but that's just ignorant.

Thank you for recognizing the hate and ingratitude that soldiers, particularly of the Viet Nam era, have to deal with.

If you will read some of the Q&A in this section, you will see that it is fairly pervasive.
