They believe that thousands of years ago, god's priesthood (his authority...hard to explain) was on the earth, but all of jesus' apostles and followers who had this priesthood were killed and there was an apostasy, or period of time without god's authority on earth.
Then in the 1800's a man named Joseph Smith asked god which church he should join (because there was a lot of religious confusion at the time). Then god and jesus appeared to him and told him not to join any of them because none of the current churches had the whole truth. God later gave Joseph smith the priesthood and the book of mormon, and jo started the mormon religion which claims to have the "full, restored gospel of god." Again, this is just what they BELIEVE to be true.
Hope this helped!

Christ established his church 2000 years ago. After a period of time, his church no longer existed on the earth. The Apostles were killed, the followers had no leadership, and the doctrine began to be altered by man, and eventually manipulated for power.
Jesus Christ restored his original church to the earth through the prophet Joseph Smith. It is Christ's church. Not smiths, not Mormons, not Hinkleys.
Don't believe me....ask God!

As the American Revolution ended and the Anglican church no longer held sway, thousands of little community churches sprang up, most with the idea that a "Great Apostasy" had occurred and they were ordained to give Jesus' original church a 'restart'. Smith was exposed to this type of religious argument all his life as to what was the true 'restored' church; his church was no different. If he hadn't inherited Sidney Rigdon's congregation, the mormons would've faded in into history like another bad dream...

The original church of Christ had living prophets and apostles, it had continuing revelation from God, and continuing addition to scripture. This was lost after the apostles died out, and it was restored thru Joseph Smith.

While one before me has listed a GREAT article (obviously cut and paste job, I would have given you the link), the following link will give you all the information you want. It is the "About Us" link on the OFFICIAL church website and not someone who knows very little about our beliefs trying to tell you how screwed up we are.
Or you can e-mail me from my profile on here and I'll be glad to answer your questions.

Well, the Mormons teach that the LDS Inc. Church has restored the original church of Christ.. Which ironically did not contain "mormon" or "Latter day saint'. So I'm not exactly sure.

We (the L.D.S.) have been taught that the Church of Christ fell into Apostasy. If that is true, then it would have to be restored.

It was not restored. The Mormon or LDS church is a false cult
If it had been begun today, it would be called a sex cult.
Joseph Smith was a sex pervert who wanted to have sex with lots of different women. He was not content to follow the Bible which says, "one man and one woman".
So he invented a new religion which taught that men could and should have many wives.
And some were stupid enough to believe him.
Like his 25 wives.
