You should be able to get a work permit, this is a bit like the US green card. Plenty of US citizens working here temporarily or have recently moved here. A placement service may not be needed. Why not check the employment adverts of Australian newspapers online just before you are ready to leave the US?
Major newspapers - The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian (national) The Courier Mail (Brisbane) The Age (Melbourne) The Advertiser (Adelaide) The Mercury (Hobart) and I don't know the name of the main Perth newspaper.
There are also employment adverts online. Work in IT, mining, housing and larger construction, bar and other work in tourist areas are just some of the work you may pick up.

You can organise your own work before you apply for a working visa. If you try working while on a tourist visa you will be deported. Check out all the information you need about the different visas at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship web page at http://www.immi.gov.au

G'day,
One thing for sure, with tourist visa, you cannot work in Australia. Check with the closest Australian Embassy/High Comm abt the right visa for you.
Depending on what sort of jobs you are looking for, you might still have to ask an employment agency to assist you finding the right one. As far as I can tell (and i've used alot of them), they do not charge the employee. They charge the employer.
Some online job websites in Australia that you might want to check:
www.seek.com.au
www.careerone.com.au
www.mycareer.com.au
Hope this helps. Good luck on your move and welcome to Australia :)

No, u cannot work in Australia on a tourist visa. You will be deported. You do not need an agency to find work. Most agencies are free anyway.
