So my car got scratched in a parking lot and I don't know who did it. I plan on filing a claim with my insurance company to get this fixed. My deductible is $500. My question is:

What safeguards do insurance companies have in place to prevent me from changing my collision and comprehensive coverage to drop my deductible to $100, get my car fixed, then switch the coverage back to my normal rate?

If you drop your deductible, they will have a watch put on your account for 3 months or so. If you put in a comprehensive claim, it will be investigated, mark my words. If you have proof or a witness the scratch was just done, like a security video, a report to a security guard or police, etc, you will have your car fixed no problem. If you can't prove it, or you have any rust in the scratch showing it is not new, you will have major legal problems, possibly insurance fraud charges. If you switch your deductible back before renewal you will incur an "insurance reduction" surcharge or fee.
I am a licenced broker, and I have seen fraud attempts, I have seen people convicted and sentenced, it isn't worth it. Every insurance company vigorously pursues fraud, and they will spend thousands of dollars to catch a 500 dollar fraud, as a deterrent to others.

Depending on who your insurance carrier is:

I worked for this company where if someone wants to lower their deductible, we had to take pictures of their car first and analyze and write down any existing damage before the company actually consider and approve it in writing.

I know of some insurance company who will lower your ded over the phone w/o looking at the car.

The ins claim reps do look back at your file to see any activity that was done.

I had my brand new Acura, which I only had for 1 month got keyed.in the parking lot while I was working. The entire car! My ded was $500. I never reported it to the insurance company. It looks soo ugly. =(

That is called insurance fraud and you can get fined by doing that. If you really want to do something about the scratch go to a car parts store like Auto Zone. Ask them what do they have for covering scratches and stuff like that. If not then just have that little spot repainted.

Claim reps look at the coverage that you had at the time the claim was reported. That is why I have a $100 deductible all the time. I don't feel like having to worry about coming up with $500. I would rather pay a little bit more every month for the convience and peace of mind.

It's not worth it. The'll figure out what your doing. With today's technology, they can track what changes are made. Besides it's insurance fraud. If it's a small scratch, then it may not be worth the trouble.
