So I've started a kickboxing class which I'm super duper stoked about! It's alot of fun and not only will it get me in shape and teach me some self defense maneuvers, but I also have a chance to compete against other girls if I decide to take this seriously enough and really committ. The problem is, I'm not looking forward to having warped ears, or black eyes, or broken jaws and noses so I'm a little worried that it may be too extreme of a sport for me. I dunno...those of you out there who actually do this, is competing really the ultimate goal of this sport or am I just better off training and getting in shape with it?

I am a woman who has done kickboxing for the last four years. If you are worried about injuries from sparring, then don't spar yet. Just concentrate on training and learning moves according to proper technique using the heavy bag and someone holding mitts and kick shields. Most of the women in my kickboxing classes never got in the ring to spar... they just wanted a good workout. You are right, kickboxing is SO much fun, and you will get in great shape. Don't do anything before you are ready.

If you want to try sparring, find someone who will just get in the ring with you and let you hit them, while they practice their defense and NOT hit back (assuming they are wearing headgear, of course). I did this with several women who wanted to try sparring, but didn't feel comfortable with fists coming at their face. In addition, if/when you feel ready, have someone SLOWLY punch at you while you practice blocking, slipping and other defensive moves. Females are socialized NOT to hit other people and to suppress their own aggression. Sparring is great, and you will eventually get hit... but that's part of the learning process. I've sparred quite a bit and the worst I've ever gotten hurt was a few black eyes... no blood.

I would say that is for you to decide. I have seen some people pushed or pressured to actually getting into a ring on some fight card by their coach and instructor and that can result in you getting hurt faster than anything else. A cardio kickboxing class in itself does not prepare you to step into the ring with someone that trains to fight.

As for the ears, black eyes, and bruises buy your own full face head gear and a decent mouthpiece and use and wear them when sparring with others. The mouth piece will do an adequate job in protecting your teeth and jaw if you wear it. The head gear will form and shape to the contour of your own skull and give you maximum protection from bruises, and cauliflower ears.

If you originaly joined just to work out, thats probably where you should stay, but I say if you feel the drive to compete, you should at least give it a try. There aren't near as many injuries in martial arts competitions as people think. All local and national martial arts competitions are going to be very well regulated, very safe, and they are always fun. Just enjoy, and compete to the best of your abilities.

Don't go in for the competition, because you may go against people who are crazy to win at any cost.

You should be able to find a group that do it fo fun, with minimal of no contact... so that you don't have to worry about bruises or black eyes.

I did jujitsu and Tai Chi many years ago... and we were very careful to protect our partners... And no one would work out with those people who weren't considerate... who got too aggressive...

It is entirely up to you. My worst injuries have come in training. After you get a few months of training under your belt, rethink your situation. If you want to try it, enter a reputable amateur competition. Make sure you are paired against an opponent with similar experience.

Pretty girls fight too. Check out Erin Toughill.

Only what you think matters. I can give you a little advice though, if you want to try fighting, it doesn't mean you have to be a fighter for the rest of your life. Try doing a match or two, then decide.

i'm guessing that one in all those Wing Chun instruction you do is geared in direction of highway protection. in the adventure that your pals practice for 1v1 competitions, then you're going to could desire to understand a thank you to combat opposition form suits. the main rationalization why Wing Chun sucks interior the hoop: it rather is experienced for the streets. on the streets, once you're getting mugged or jumped, you and your assailant are actually not squaring off. You and your assailant are actually not scuffling with one yet another for a combat victory. Your assailant is only after your existence, or your sources. in short, your opponent will come to you. on the different hand, interior the contest, you have warring parties who're scuffling with you for rank, prize, exciting, and/or project. as a result, they study distance scuffling with. each thing is often approximately protecting you out of their area mutually as protecting you in selection for their strikes. they gained't only come to you so rather. My suggestion could be to coach distance scuffling with and understand the strategies of a adventure fighter. additionally, do not chase your opponent. If he strikes away, why shop on with him? waste of power and placing your self up for an beginning. Oh, and remember approximately to be backside-heavy, making use of your hips and physique for power and tension.
