It was not a painting but a photograph of an actual nun playing the guitar. I remember seeing the photograph back in the 70s. I remember seeing posters made of it. Sorry, but I don't remember who took the photograph ... but a search for nuns playing guitars photographs will probably get you better results.
A painting may have been done afterwards based on the photograph but it was the pic that got all the attention.

In the early 60's a nun made a #1 hitplaying a song (not in english ) and that song and picture inspired the movie with Sidney Poiter and some nuns down in Mexico. The song was sang in French!
