Well, you're in the family section so either you are looking for a way to end family ties by smothering someone with a pillow or you feel smothered.

The way you feel when you associate with someone that leaves you gasping for air could be included in the definition for smothered.

If you feel smothered you should either confront the situation or find ways to avoid it.

Literally, it means cutting off the breath by covering the face (nose and mouth) with a soft bulky material - pillow, blanket, sand, etc.
Figuratively, it means feeling so surrounded and hemmed in that it seems difficult to breathe either because people actually are close or because paths of escape are not visible.
