This information goes along with another poster stating "Water Mark" your images and make them small.

Most of the time people can get the photo off of the website even if "right clicking" is disabled (if they know what they are doing). The average person will not try and go around blocks to get a picture.

Most of the time to prevent this is to put your name, copyright etc going diagonally all the way across the picture in 3 places. Not to big but enough that it would be a problem for somebody to fix it. Also keep your dimensions small (example 800x640) and then saving the file at a medium jpg level which might give a file size of 100kb. Then you let your customers know that their print will not have your "water mark" on it.

So they stole your image and then fixed it and took out the "water mark" the very best they might get is a wallet size photo.

Here is an example which I should have also made it smaller but you will have an idea of what I mean.

One more thing. The one that I would worry about or maybe not is the person that steals your image and you see it in a national magazine. You tell them it is yours and they say it is theirs if you can prove it is yours then you have the law on your side. If they did it with intent then they can be sued up to $100,000.00 and that is coming for the Supreme Court.

If you have a Nikon (I guess others have it on their pro DSLR cameras) put your name in the comment so that it is in your Metadata. That is permanent and can not be removed.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

Some webbuilding programs can allow you to turn off right-click options on objects, or to put your own text in a pop-up box when an object is right-clicked ("This photo/art is under copyright. Please contact me if you would like a copy.") This way no one could download the art o their computer; however, this wouldn't stop people from highlighting the whole page and copy/pasting it, or screencapping the image.

Probably the best way to protect your pics is to sign them, and put a watermark behind them of your name +website name so they cannot claim it as theirs.

Disable the "right click" function. That can be done with Javascript.

It won't stop image theft, just slow it down. If your visitors are using Internet Explorer 6 with the the image toolbar enabled, they can still get your pics. Or they can get your pics from their browser cache. Sorry this isn't very positive, just thought you might need to know.

Good luck!

Many people have tried and few have succeeded. Unless you create a flash picture it will be in the cache. Someone can always take a screen shot and have the picture. Blocking right clicks will cause people not to come to your site and it can be turned off in Firefox.

Make your web images low resolution. They will still look all right on the screen, but will make a really crappy print.
Put a watermark on the front, big enough to make it tedious to remove it in PS.

The last piece of advice was the best, and it is about the only thing that you can do. Make them low-res, and watermark the **** out of 'em. Good luck.

Stop hanging around people. Don't go out in public.
