You should use one of those neck pouches that you just hang around your neck and the pouches can be inside your shirt so noone can pickpocket you. You can buy them anywhere, here are some links:

As for the rest of the money (if you don't want to carry a lot of cash when you go out), it's best to put it in the hotel safe (if there is one), if not, then put it in a hidden area in your biggest luggage and LOCK it. Don't forget to lock up your passport or any other important document.

Plus it depends on how long you are staying. 4k is alot of money in China. Everything is very Cheap. just keep your wallet in your front pocket also. China is a great place and the people are great. Have fun

Well I'm currently in China on Biz from the U.S., I would say it depends on where you are going in China? Allot of places are safe and a wallet is sufficient however other areas of china run ramped in pick pocketers! The best advice is to withdrawal the money you need from CHINA ATMS in airports, hotels or Malls (only)! and this would have you avoids carrying large amounts of cash on your persons as that is a bad idea no matter what country you are in. If you must carry this cash I would separate it and store in different areas on your person so if you do get taken hopefully it will not be all of it. I store my money in a money clip & usually put it in my front pocket (never in my wallet). Take hotel shuttles & taxis with meters and always right down a license plate number before entering! Most important as the locals look for tourist/ visitors is to try not to look to much like a visitor try to look like you know where your going, much like trying to look at a beautiful woman while walking with your wife- notice things around you but without them noticing you checking things out? But honestly if you are carrying that much cash its had not to be nervous. Good luck!

I was visiting China a week back. Was carrying 2.5K USD (a lot for a 8 day trip there).
I used to exchange into RMB only in 100s or 200s a day and kept in my wallet. Rest of the money (100USD notes) I used to keep in the front pocket of my jeans.
Didn't face any problem

Ok ... I need to point out a few things to you ... even in Beijing most stores dont accept Credit Cards or Traveller Cheques. So whoever told you to bring $$ is correct.
The easiest way to keep your money safe is to put it in the Hotel Safe if they have one. Only bring enough each day and dont show it around. Keep the money in different places eg. Wallet, pocket and traveller's wallet (the type you put around your neck) at the same time. Idea is when you pay for something just take a potion out so people around dont see you pulling a large ward of cash.
Have a good trip and good luck

Traveler's checks are a great way to stay safe. Also using a prepaid credit card.Walmart and CVS both offer both options. With traveler's checks you can get insurance and they spend just like cash and regular checks and if they get lost or stolen, they can be replaced.Prepaid credit cards are the same way, maybe a little easier to use.I would keep your money on you when on the plane, and after you check in your hotel, only take enough with you that you tihnk you might need.Mastercard's GreenDotOnline prepaid cards are available in different increments. You can divide your money into say $500-$1000 each card, that way you can leave behind at the hotel in safekeeping the majority of your money and the rest with you for meals, etc.I would keep your money in any form in your wallet in an inside pocket, purse, etc.Relax and be safe.Have fun!

you can use 2 body wallet (those design for you to keep money at your waist.
1 for usd and 1 for rmb.
then u can some money put in your wallet (not too much. a few hungry of RMB) this is the money for you to buy item that is over 100RMB.
Place loose note in your shirt or pant pocket. this is the money u use for buying small value item. for eg a bowl of noodle.
It is common sense not to display too much money in the public esp you already bring alot of attention to urself.
i would usually allocate/distribute my money nicely for that day activities. If i stay in a repul hotel, i may also use their safe.
I also like to use ATM card and credit card in the city to min my cash on hand. But if u use credit card, do becare not the take your eyes off the card.

I have a fairly light one, the Canon EOS 550D. It's fine in some situations but annoying and not practical in others. If you're going somewhere where you know you'll be taking loads of photos and the image quality and everything else is important (like sight seeing in India) then you'll be using it so much that you won't be thinking about having to carry it. Whereas if you just decide to go for a hike or you're catching up with friends in a public place and you think you might wanna take some pics... they become annoying and bulky in those situations. I have my Canon DSLR and also a Canon IXUS 1000HS point n shoot. If I was going sight seeing in India I would be taking all my pics with my DSLR for sure! I use my point-n-shoot for casual situations where I can just pop it in my bag... photo blogging etc. I just carry it around in case I wanna take a photo of something on the go or some happy snaps. Otherwise I will use my DSLR. Especially in situations where you have low light and perhaps you're not allowed to use a flash (this is common in temples and such), you will deifnitely want a DSLR because they perform 100% better than a little point-n-shoot in low light. This is due to the ISO. You can research that if you want to know more... but what you really need to know is pics you take in low light with a DSLR will come out much clearer, sharper and in focus than a point-n-shoot. A low light photo on my point n shoot would be so grainy, blurry from hand shake and also it wouldn't focus properly in low light. Whereas with a DSLR, even on auto settings, the photos will come out so much better

I will be there in a few days. I have a little wallet that hangs on a cord around my neck with my visa. Put small amounts in your pocket for that day and keep the rest in different places on your body and under your clothes. I wear pants with lots of pockets. No pickpocket will search 8 pockets. Best wishes.

Get the 4K put into money orders, that way if the DO get lost (Hoping the don't) then you can recover the money. I would keep the moolah in your wallet, in your purse or carry on (if you carry a purse!!), that way you know it is always with you!!
Hope you have a fun, safe trip.
