Ok I am in nursing scholl and will graduate in spring of 2009. I recently got a job at a hospital a nurse extern but the problem is they wont let me do anything..and it is fustrating of course they let me do all the nurse aide stuff ex bathing and wiping *** but I do not get to do anything else I finally asked one of the nurses could I insert the foley or NG tube and she said NO and speaking with other nurse externs that are graduating next year they weren't allowed to do anything either. Is that the norm? I did not even get orientated with a nurse I had orientation for two weeks with a nurse aide.

Ok you have to take baby steps...I never worked in a hospital until I was an LPN. The best nurses are those who have worked as an AIDE or LPN first. They are more humble and willing to help a fellow nurse and don't look upon traditional nurse aide duties as "nurse aide work." True nurses are highly skilled and aides can't replace them, but don't get too high on your horse or you'll find that when you're a nurse and need that nurse aide help you lift or wipe a** they won't be as willing to help you and leave you out in the cold. Treat them with respect....As for your original question. You're a little far off from graduating. Can you sit for your LPN/LVN boards before graduation? If you can, I would that way you could do more things. Are you working through the hospital yourself or with an instructor? If with an instructor ask if she/he can watch you perform things. If not and your with the hospital by yourself, I'm sorry you just have to watch....Unless you get to know a real cool nurse who can teach you somethings before you graduate (not performing skills, but walking you through them and giving advice). You will realize once you finish school and pass your boards how valueable your license is and you won't want to jeaprodize it....You'll understand how the other, more experienced nurses feel about letting someone "play on their license." Nursing is a big liability in itself, when you have that license you don't want to lose it because of someone else's mistake. Sorry to sound so negative...just being truthful, you'll understand after you pass boards!

Hospitals are responsible for whatever the student nurses do. If you did something wrong or caused harm to a patient, the pt can sue the hospital and you so to avoid this, they won't let student nurses do procedures. Your clinical instructor's nurse license will also be in trouble. When you get your own license, then take all the opportunity you have to do procedures. As a student nurse before, we get to practice on mannequins. Though nothing compares to the real ones. Good Luck!

They aren't legally allowed to let you do various procedures without further education and certification. And with almost two years of school to go, plus state boards, you're a long way from your RN. You'll get there - but in the meantime, will be limited in what you're allowed to do.
