My advice, be careful. Its very easy to get hurt with that kind of activity. I believe it can work, but make sure you don't take any chances with strangers, and never fall for anyone without some sufficient investigating.

When someone winks at another person, he/she wants to
get the attention of that person. It depends now on the person winked at to respond. If you reward that wink with a smile
then it will encourage the winker to approach you and start
a conversation which can lead to a thing or another. However, if you just ignore it, then nothing will happen and
that will be the end of it.

Online dating is like real life dating except it's online. What would you normally do when someone winks at you?

"wink" sounds like match.com's icebreaker feature. You can wink back and wait for them to contact you via private message, or you can just reply back with a private message thanking them for their interest and making a comment on something about their profile that interested you.

If not interested, you can click the "no thanks" link and match.com will send them a generic notice letting them know or you can write them yourself and politely tell them.

Well...it is definitely a compliment, but be leery if this is the best they have to offer.
