I finally chose AF out of every branch and now I am reading that they actually don't even travel outside of the US very often. That is what I really want, aside from other things by joining the military. I don't have family or obligations holding me at home, so I want to travel! Do certain job titles allow different travel opportunities? Does anyone know which they are? I actually do not know which career I want to persure, is there a list along with a breakdown of exactly what they are/do/etc? I am very excited to join the military, I just don't know which direction to take, the recruiters only tell me what I want to hear, I wanted personal experience advice. Anything helps!

OMG! Where did you hear AF doesn't travel outside the US often???!!! You were HIGHLY misinformed! The Air Force is in more places in the world than any othere branch!
In my 1st 2 years in the AF I went to 6 different countries (besides the US and stopping off in a few countries while traveling) and literally flew completely around the world (in 86 days.) At my 2nd base I did only go to one other country and only flew half way around the world but that was because when I returned from that deployment my husband and I decided to have a baby.
Now we are about to PCS overseas with our whole family.

Dood,
Whoever told you they dont travel outside the US is full of it. Ive been all over the place. Mostly the Middle East, but all over the Pacific and Europe as well. If you chose a job like Finance, or Contracting or something like that you wont have all the oppurtunity to travel, but if you are a cop, which I wouldnt recommend, or an Engineer, like me, you can travel all over. Certain engineer units in the AF are gone 300 days ot of the year, some to the desert, some to South America. Its awesome. Congrats on choosing the AF, it really is a lot of fun. Just choose a job that you are interested in. Desk job, or real work, no matter what you do, be sure it intersets you. Hope it helps.

Great choice in the AF, I was in for 12 years and loved it. If you want travel, then air crew jobs are the best way to go, I was away from my home base around 250- 300 days a year. some trips were a few days, some a few weeks and some for 6 months or more. Loadmasters get to travel the most. its a great job and easy to get accepted. Also, Boom operators get lots of travel. Check out Airforce.com , I strongly suggest the AF to anyone who is qualified.

If you want out of the states, there are a few careers that you need to avoid. First.. missiles. Those folks are very limited in where they can go, even within the US.
Second, a job that is aircraft specific, unless it is one overseas. Engine shop and Crew Chiefs are the top two that I can think of. There are others. We've had friends that are B52 only, and they only have 2 bases that they can go to. Even their deployable location stinks!
There are MANY jobs that are worldwide... everybase has them! Finance, Personnel, IM, CE, SF, and a lot of aircraft maintainance fields (hubby has worked on 9 air frames during his 20 years, and we've been all over the world).
Just keep doing your research! Best of luck!

well i have been in the AF for nearly 10 years, and who ever told you that we dont travel outside the US very often is a full of *hit. I have been sent TDY over 7 times to some real crapholes, and it will only get worst with iran and North korea acting up. People think if a democrat is in office, things will change? NO- is the answer! If you joined the AF just to collect a paycheck and stay in the states doing nothing; well you will be in for a real shocker young lady. If you join, you will most likely deploy to the dessert, and i know you dont want to hear that, but you said you did want to travel?

The AF travels plenty. You might look for an air crewman position which pretty much guarantees travel, though lots of short trips.
The AF has bases in Germany and many other places that are manned with AF personnel.
The Army also travels a lot. Every other tour is overseas.
