I have a Muslim aquaintance whose husband recently passed away. I don't know much about the Muslim religion so I was wondering what would be appropriate to do for her or say to her to express my sorrow. I don't see her that often but our children go to school together so we will chat sometimes in passing. I want to be able to express my sympathy but I don't want to say or do the wrong thing.
Please help!

You sound like a friendly fellow ..I doubt anything you say will be wrong . Just be yourself and say something like "I'm sorry for your loss" ..etc€. In Islam belief in fate, in this matter death is very important and is a pillar of faith. All things happen by the will of Allah (swt). The Prophet taught us to say in these situations " To God we belong and to God we shall return". I'm sure the sister would appreciate your consideration. My prayers are with her as well.

peace unto you

Muslims try to remember God all the time but when someone passes away the family members try much harder to remember God.So they can ask God to forgive the individual that has passed away. If you express your feelings by saying "may Allah grant him Jannat"(paradise) then the family members will be very pleased.

Just do it like u always did. Even if u wanna use ur own way of expressing it. Trust me it will work. Don't get clouded by this Osama and Taliban.

Just be respectful.. (which I can sense you are)
If you are really close ones.. you can use Islamic vacabulary.. as 'May Allah rest his soul in peace'. She'd like that. and offer her your support and sympathy... tell her she isnt alone.

Good luck.

Well just be honest and tell her how you feel. You could say " I am truly sorry for your loss." or you could say " May Allah have mercy on him." Just be honest and sincere.

just give her a condolence as a human to human. you may as well pray for her husband to "lay and rest among the mu'min (faithful people)"

Just showing her that you care will be enough...

I'm sure she'll appreciate your kindness, but I really don't think there's anything special you can do.

Peace.
