In the song "Nearer my God To Thee," there is a line with a word I don't understand.

"Out of my stony griefs
Bethel I’ll raise;"

What is bethel?

Bethel is a Hebrew term. Beth refers to house. El referred to the Hebrew God. So Bethel means House of God.

Hope that helps,

Teri

It means house of God. It is Hebrew; it's what Jacob named the place where he had the dream about the angels ascending and descending on a ladder into heaven (Genesis 28).
