I know in the weight pull competitions for Pits they use a padded harness. If your puppy is going to be in competitions then get a good nylon harness and pad it. Starting out you will only be having it get used to the harness and cart. DO NOT immediately start adding weight.

He's still growing at 7 months, I don't think you should have him pull weights at all yet. Wait a few months.
Oh yeah, and don't use a regular harness. You should get a special one.

If you mean the harness you use for walking on a leash, I don't think it is strong enough or designed properly.
You need a good breast band to get a good pull.

I would wait for a few months his bones are still developing. He is way too young now.
Do not work with real heavy weights until he has the muscles to do it. You could ruin the bone growth with too heavy of weigths or by pushing him past his limits. Be careful
Running is a good exercise to develop muscles, so is swimming. Go bike riding with him running next to you. Not to far at first, just enough to tire him out.
