I heard that the LA zoo is depressing and not well kept. I know that there are great places in San Diego, but I'm hoping for something closer to LA. Wishful thinking?

Once upon a time, I could have recommended The Wildlife Waystation, but they've been closed to the public for years due to endless legal problems.

Because of severe zoning regulations, you won't find too many animal place in LA County outside of the zoo.

Consider:
The Wild Animal Park in north San Diego county.
The Living Desert somewhere around Palm Springs
Moorpark College has an animal show on Sundays.
Shambala is the name of Tippi Hedren's place. But they don't have a whole lot of animals, and they don't allow children.

If it farm animals you want, consider
The Happy Barn in Tarzana
There's another petting zoo somewhere on Reseda Blvd, but I can't think of the name off hand.
The Studio City Farmer's Market has a petting zoo on Sundays.

Beware of road side zoos. They may or may not have insurance, and you don't want to end up like the man that got attacked by a chimp.

The San Diego zoo may be a bit of a drive but it is well worth it. The zoo grounds are beautiful and the animals seem very well taken care of. By far, its the best zoo I've been to!

Also toward San Diego is the Wild Animal Park. Tippy Hedren has a wild cat sancuary in Acton. Check it out.
