I have a 41 pound Labrador retriever mix. Lately he has been pretty gassy, and the stench is so horrible I have to look around to make sure he didn't poop on the floor!

Since we rescued him over two years ago hes been on Nutro brand foods with no problems. We feed him one greenie and a chicken jerky treat that he's never had this issue with before.

Any ideas?

I'm not going to get Iams as I've heard too many negative reviews about it.

Ready To Go: There is just under half of the 17 pound bag to go, and our dog does not eat too much per day. He eats maybe 1/2 - 1 cup of dogfood per day.

It's very possible that Nutro slightly changed the mix for the type of dog food you buy. Why not finish up the bag and see if he readjusts to it? If he is still having an upset stomach by the end of the bag it may be time to try a new type of food. If you stick with Nutro he will probably have less trouble adjusting to the switch. If you want to change off of Nutro I highly reccomened Innova, it's never been recalled and it's a very high quality food. Good luck! Remeber- not every food works for every dog, so what is good for someone elses dog may be a bad idea for yours, so try some different things, and let your dog decide which is best.

-so you have about 8.5 lbs of food left? that's a lot, and if in 8.5 lbs of food he has stopped being gassy yet, it may be time to try a differnt formula. Maybe one for sensitive stomachs? It might be worth going to the Nutro website and seeing what is available, or calling their hot line. They would be able to point you in the right direction- but be aware that a Nutro rep will try their hardest to keep you with Nutro, reguarless of whether that is best for your dog or not.

I don't know how long you have been using greenies for but for my dogs (Rottweiler & Miniature poodle) those worked great at first but soon turned on us. They had great breath but the farting was unbearable. I changed their food a few times & someone told me to try ending the greenies and then the gas was gone. So they eat solid gold dry dog food now (lamb & rice recipe) and with it I use "eagle pack hollistic solution" which aids in the natural relief of diarrhea, loose stool, & upset stomach in dogs, they recommend it when you are switching to a new brand of food. I don't know if it was putting an end to the greenies or their new diet that fixed the problem, but I am happy to say my house is now odor free ! Hope this can help :)

When my dogs get gassy I give them some fat free plain yogurt. They love it and it helps restore the natural bacteria levels in the digestive tract which will lessen the gas and nearly eliminate the odor. Works for people too. There are suppliments called probiotics but yogurt is the cheapest, easiest way to get the good stuff back in the system. I would give a 41 lb dog about a half a cup once a day for several days then once or twice a week thereafter. Hope this helps.

I agree with Bambi, it's probably the food. It may have been okay while he was growing but his metabolism has changed. Only 1 of mine had a problem with gas when she ate Iams & any type of pork so 4 of mine are on Science Diet & the toy poodles are on Natural Recipe dry & canned. So far, no gas problems. See if you can get some sample size packages of different foods to try out before you buy big bags.

Nutro always makes my dog super farty. It could kill us if we don't clear out fast enough! I switched his food to another brand. Nutro also made my foster dog gassy. I'd try another type of food for him. I like California Naturals. It's hard to find, but high quality food.

Its the food hes eating. But also be careful when switching foods cause that will also cause gas for alittle while untill hes digestive track gets used to it.

How old is your dog? I have an elderly dog (16 year old pug) with heart/lung problems that pants and swallows air a bit. What comes in - front end- comes out the other end. You may want to find out if there is an underlying problem with your vet.
