My mom was talking to her dentist who apparently owns quite a few guns. He was saying that he heard (never tried) that a deflated balloon placed on the muzzle of a gun, would decrease the noise put out by the round. Has anyone ever heard of this or tried it? I am extremely wary of blocking those gases with anything, and I have no desire to simply try it out and see if it works. I want people's expert knowledge on whether it is a dangerous idea, or simply one that wouldn't work. I am really curious, because it does have the potential to be pretty cool.

I highly doubt it would work. The principle behind a supressor is that the hot and compressed gases from powder ignition are allowed to expand at a slower controlled pace thus reducing the volume. The sound of the blast at the muzzle is multiple things, one being the rapid dispersion of gases, much like uncorking a champagne bottle and two being a cracking sound from the bullet at supersonic speed. Thus why a supressor is best paired with subsonic ammunition; to reduce both contributing factors to noise.
I don't think the balloon would hold enough gas pressure back to be dangerous, other than the off chance of being hit in the eye by a broken piece of balloon. Second any alteration of volume of the gunshot would probably not be noticeable. Also of course, you will be the strangest looking person at the range, when you whip out a balloon and start pulling it over the barrel. I myself would find this quite humorous, but I'm not sure what the range nazi/supervisor would think of this.
The other major issue here is that suppressor manufacturing and possession without the proper permission is illegal. Yes, I understand it is just a balloon, but logic is not something the ATF is very good with. They have been known to forcefully collect little torch cut pieces of sheet steel from gun parts kits. These little scraps of metal are practically nothing, while at the same time, they really don't care that the parts kit contains all of the full auto parts but the receiver. ATF agents are some of the dumbest sacks of poo I have ever seen.

there are lots of ways to enjoy a gun..but blocking the gases just to see if the baloon will inflate is not a good idea.. Probably the baloon it'self will not block the gas sufficient to cause damage, but It is possible.. the only way to find out is to try it.. but if you do.. get away from the gun and pull the trigger with a string.. the last thing you want is for a piece of metal to come zooming back toward your face..

This is sillier than thinking a two-litre soda bottle will work as a suppressor on anything larger than a .22 or .25.

Only on a long barreled .22 rifle.
The balloon will work only for one shot, the soda bottle for a few shots.
However, it is less trouble to use Colibri .22 CB's or CB Caps, in a rifle they are virtually silent, and you don't have to put anything on the barrel to risk damage to the gun, or throwing your aim off.
None of these improvised silencers will work on a centerfire rifle with standard ammo.

that wont work and there is reason to just buy a real one they are legal in most states you just need a class 3 they are not hard to get

No, but if it did it would be illegal, anything that silences the sound is. Also the gases need more of a area or material to be suppressed, the balloon would expand quickly and release the noise quickly.

There is a small possiblity of it working, Ive also heard of takeing an empty pepsi bottle, filling it with foam insulation and clamping it over a rifle barrel. Ive never tryed it but im guessing it must work to some degree....
