My three year old son tries to eat the small pieces of kitty litter that end up on floor (like so small you cannot see them until he finds them). He seems to be craving it relentlessly! Does anyone know any reason why he would want to do something so gross!?

He's still exploring with his mouth and hands. My 15 month old runs straight to the dog food bowl (very small dry dog food) and she plays with it just to feel all the little pieces. Maybe you can try some sensory exercises during playtime to get him focused on 'good' things to play with and not the cat litter

When he does it, if you are really reacting to him - he may be doing it to get attention.

Dont mention the word POTTY and GROSS in the same paragraph if you dont want your baby to think that ALL potty is gross and then he'll develop a complex when he needs to go potty himself

Because he likes your reaction when he knows that you've seen him...I'm guessing the look on your face is a picture as you run towards him in an almost slow motion type of run saying:' Nnnnnnnaaaaoooooooo!!!!!'
Three year olds get attention anyway they can!

There is a condition called pica where people crave things like clay, dirt and laundry starch. You should call his pediatrician.
