I just bought a new parakeet, and the way he stands on the perch is weird, it's like his legs are broken. I put a link to a picture, do you have any idea on how I can give him any therapy?? Do you think it is hereditary??? O should I return him to his old owner?? He has a normal life, he eats, drinks, and flies as much as a regular and healthy bird.

I just need to add that I just got him yesterday, asap I'm gonna take him to a vet. I don't know if I better return it to the owner or if I keep it and see what I can do for him.

It's not a fracture, it's a birth defect. All of the babies that have come from one of my cockatiels have feet like that. It doesn't hurt them at all, just makes it a little more difficult to sit on a perch but they learn to adapt. It's nothing to worry about and you don't need to see a vet. If you want to, that's fine, but they'll most likely tell you the same thing and it is possible to get surgery for it, but it's expensive and can sometimes do more harm than good. I would just leave the matter alone and just have fun with your new pet.

some birds when they are little develop "splayed legs". It makes them sit and stand a little funny. We had a parrotlett that held her legs the same way. I'm not sure if this is what is wrong with your bird, but if it is healthy, it might be the cause. Is he an older bird? He could have arthritis. That can cause their feet and legs to look weird. I would take him to the vet anyway just to be sure- sometimes birds can seem healthy, and they hide sickness well. I hope everything works out the best for both of you! Good luck

The feet look like they were broken in the past, I have a rescue like that. Aside from that, he doesn't look healthy, take him to the vet. There probably isn't anything they can do about the feet, but they will give advice on perches.

Have them do a full check up, swabs, gram strains and bloodwork. this will ensure that he will be healthy.

Does he wrap his feet around a smaller perch? If so, I wouldn't worry too much. He may just be more comfortable without his feet stretched wide across a fat perch. There is a variety of perch sizes with the branch you have. He may just prefer the location.

So why haven't you taken him to the vet? Do so - and don't waste time about it. If his legs have a problem, then he is in pain. He is entitled BY LAW to receive proper medical care. The previous owner may have been cruel and didn't take him in. Don't you do that - have him checked!

By the look of the picture, he's (1.) ill. Take him to the vet. (2.) In dire need of a nail clipper.
