ok, serious question: why do we make religion so complex?

I think there are a few reasons for this, the biggest reason being that religion attempts to answer those questions which have fascinated humanity for several millennia: why are we here? Where did we come from? How should we live? What happens after we die?

One of these questions is not too difficult. Experience tells us which behaviors are favored, and which are not. Murder, theft, dishonesty are a few obvious traits that we have learned do not work well in any civilized society.

The other three questions are much more difficult. While religion does attempt to settle the matter, we all know it is far from settled. Hence the use of the word faith in regard ro religious belief. Any answer, be it from religion or science, is bound to be as complex as the question.

I think another reason is that there are so many religions.. religions that often proclaim to be the one with the truth. If all of mankind were of one religion, or of no religion, one extremely complex aspect would be removed: disagreement. An example: at one time we did not know that the Earth revolved around the Sun. Now we do. No human is in disagreement with this fact. While the intricacies of the Earth's revolution around the Sun may be complex, the concept no longer is because we all agree on it as being a matter of fact.

I think religion will never be as simple as some would wish it to be because we will never have all the answers. As soon as one question is solved to the satisfaction of the majority, another will surely take its place.

I think life is complex. Religion is serious. For all of human existence people have struggled with trying to understand issues of life and death, what happens after we die? How do we live full and complete lives? What does it mean that innocent people suffer? Why is there evil? I don't think there are easy answers to these and all the other issues life brings. Religion is one realm that approaches these things. Science isn't simple, philosophy isn't simple. I don't see it as a negative that religion is complex.

*Is Catholic*

Because religion has a subject that is greater than we are. Why is Quantum Mechanics so complex? Because it is a very great subject. God is greater than Quantum Mechanics so we should expect that religion be more complex than Quantum Mechanics.

To come to understand the Divine Mysteries, one must be willing to learn and to be humble as that which they seek is much greater than they are. But God will teach if one is willing to be humble and take the time to learn. Even if all of life is spent learning one verse from scripture, that is a great thing to have learned. One should not be afraid of learning great things.

You are so right. Maybe they think it makes them intelligent. Like street people, they think they know everything and complicate everything. You know the street Doctors and Lawyers and Philosophers. That's why I love the last two verses in Ecclesiastes. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. It's just that simple. Or let me say, this is the way to get to heaven. I need to add that I think you are talking about people who always want to argue about the bible with very little knowledge of what they are really talking about. Not that I claim to know a lot about it myself. I am trying to learn about it now. I do know the basics, but that's about it.

Like any organization, a religion is made up of people, and they all have a different interpretation of the scripture, and different ideas as to what the church should be.

The early church had to explain all sorts of logical oddities in their various holy books, so you need quite a complex web of explanation.
