esta is the "usted" form of the verb "estar." It is the formal way to say, "how are you?"

esta could be he or she, or it could be you formal, like when your talking to an adult, because "usted" (=you formal) is conjugated along with "el" (=he) and "ella" (she) in spanish.
so you could be saying "how is he/she doing?"
or "how are you doing?" (formally)

"Esta" is used for both the second person (you) and the third person (he/she) singular.

¿Cómo estas? =second person "tu"
¿Cómo está? =second person formal "usted"
¿Cómo está? = third person also for "el/ella"
¿Cómo están? = third person plural for "ellos/ellas/ustedes?
¿Cómo estamos? = second person plural for "nosotros"
Hope this helps

"Estar" is the verb "to be," so "esta" is "are you/you are" (formal.) "Como" is "how."
