If you can check the fuel pressure with a gauge, you may see some other symptoms that could lead to a better solution. The fuel pressure needs to be present in order to start. The pressure regulator can fail and you won't have any pressure or you will not have enough. The fuel pressure should remain pretty near constant at the output of the F.P. regulator.
The next thing to check would be the spark or ignition. Have you changed spark plugs recently. Where are the gaps set?
Do you have a good hot spark when you hold a plug wire close to a ground when cranking the engine. You should disable the engine from starting, but still be able to check for a hot, visible spark from each plug wire. There may be a fuse which has failed, but I would hope that the crank sensor is picking up the rotation of the engine, thus sending a spark to each plug at the correct time. Look too for a vacuum leak. That would cause the engine idle to run higher than normal. Check that vacuum hoses are connected correctly, and that there are no disconnects or soggy hoses.

Does the car run the same with the air flow meter unplugged? THERES YOUR SIGN ! I know it is expensive. There are some remanufactured AFM's available. A good used air flow meter might just be the way to go. If you have access to a scan tool the AFM voltage must go up over 4 volts wide open throttle. If not give it gas and it boggs down like it is not getting fuel. On the scan tool the long and short fuel trims will be high around 126 to 130%
