You can't do it without the CDs

Not only do you need the software on them, you also need the license number

If you have a sticker with your license number on your computer you may be able to do it though Microsoft support. Be prepared for a long phone call. I haven't tried it my self but I was told by our I.T. guy that it can be done. I bought a laptop a couple of years ago from Circuit City and it didn't come with a software disc. I am in the same spot you are in. I want to re-format my drive to clear up a problem but I don't have a disc to re-install the operating system.

You have to get a Windows CD to do it. You can run the setup from the hard disk if you copy the installation files to your hard drive first, but to do that you still need the cds. Try system restore if you want to try and correct a malfunctioning Windows installation.

What kind of laptop is it? Some have hidden partitions containing the system files. Look in disk management. Right click my computer, select manage, click on disk management. The boxes on the right show you the partitions on your drive. Dell and Sony use these that I know of. Dell will also send you a cd (so I've read).

if you got the lappy new and it didnt have discs there should be a recovery console on a partition in the hard drive, switch off and back on, as soon as you hit the on button start tapping the F10 button until a menu for the recovery console appears and follow the instructions carefully for the option you select, if this doesnt appear or if you had discs and lost them you will need to buy another windows disc

Doing this as we speak on the lap top.
Without the installation disk, I would not try it! Or at least another computer!

Try the roll back feature?......

No you cannot reinstall without cd, or you should have the dump copy of it.
