Here is one of the best ideas I have ever heard, but it takes some dedication.

Dress a little boy in his dad's suit. Take a picture (or a bunch!) Next year, when he is two, do it again. Then again the following year. Do it every year until he is an adult himself. I read of a photographer Dad who did this with his son and had this wonderful record of growth in a personal, measurable way.

I guess you could do it with a little girl in Mom's dress, but men's suits are almost alike from year to year and dresses change in length and style.

Shirts, bed spreads, even car seat covers too! Although, I can't remember the name of the place that does this. Sorry!

cake and food is so old hat...try a sitting on a rug or hearth, or with a pet, it is the kids first birthday a landmark for parents...the kid doesn't care...
