Speaking as someone who married an alien, I know where of I speak. It is not illegal to marry someone from another country nor is it illegal to marry an illegal alien. It is illegal to marry someone just to hasten their ability to obtain a green card, otherwise known as a "resident alien" card. However, if you are like me, and genuinely love the person you are marrying, it is all right to do so. Yes both of you must have identification, however, even illegal aliens can obtain a driver's license legally.

One last note, just because someone marries a resident of another country and that person wants to become a resident of this country, it is not an automatic process. A lot of people are under the impression that it is a given that if you marry a citizen of the United States, you automatically gain citizenship. This is not the case. There is a lengthy application and interview process that one must go through in order to gain residency. I should know, my husband is a British citizen who came over here on a tourist visa and it took us 6 years for him to become "legal".

Under the current law, the person can just return home and you can sponser them as a citizen, once you are married-provided that they are not caught as an illegal beforehand.

No, if you do your spouse after you have been married for a certain period of time will also become a citizen. That citizenship will become more solid if she has children here in the US
