Eat several helpings of high-fiber vegetables and fruit a day, and drink extra water. You shouldn't need any fiber supplements if your vegetable and fruit intake is adequate. Coffee, cola drinks, regular tea, and other caffeine-containing beverages (e.g., Dr. Pepper, Mountain Dew in the U.S.) don't qualify as "water" because the caffeine acts as a diuretic, making you urinate more than usual. That takes the water out of your system too fast.

Eats plenty of fruits, vegetables and greens. Watch how many medications you take as this can cause constipation also.

You can take a stool softener when needed, this is not a laxative.
