Lisa, I agree with you, in my experience anyway.
Scooter an alternative thought for you, the difference between being agnostic and being an atheist is every bit as vast as the difference between being a person of faith(any) and an atheist. To become an atheist and remove any doubt about gods existence (bearing in mind the abundance of pro Christianity propaganda in the 'free' world) an atheist often has to go against convention, this could only be achieved if the bible was really studied, otherwise you could not reach this decision and would be agnostic. Most atheists I know have researched the bible extensively. I know that you are liberal which is at odds with fundamentalism, I believe your choice not to be a fundamentalist would have required you to research your faith more than someone who takes everything literally, it is similar to the process an atheist goes through. I do not have any problem with someone believing in God, I think there are a lot of good moral guidelines in Christianity, fundamentalism however, in my opinion in heinous.

I'm not an atheist, but I find this to be true in general. Anybody who questions or begins to question their beliefs has started doing research & asking questions usu. in the form of learning about other religions.

In order to be an atheist you have to know why you are an atheist. Alot of Christians are Christians, but don't know why.. They just blindly believe what they are told & they believe so blindly and passionately that they label everyone who does not believe as blindly as they do and "atheist", and then condemn them to hell.

I was raised a Christian, but I always had questions when I was young. I was silenced or told that I was blaspheming if I thought anything that didn't go along with the Christian doctrine.

And then I started to read & research for myself and.....I can't believe how deaf, dumb, & blind some people can be.

Your statement is correct for many atheists. After all, most people don't start out as atheists, nor do they have sudden conversion experiences to rationality. However, as they begin to come to their senses and think carefully about reality and the sheer improbability of so-called "divine beings" and what-not, many of them begin to think more deeply about their religious heritage and religions in general. They begin to research and study the sacred writings of their parents and of others. And, the more understanding they gain, the stronger their realization that religion is irrational superstition with no relevance to reality or to how one is to live in this reality. Finally, it is true that many, perhaps even most atheists do come to know and understand religion, its texts, and its sheer wealth of misinformation than do many believers. Believers apparently prefer the false bliss of ignorance rather than learning even the most basic facts about their religion...look at the sheer number of people who apparently do NOT know that bible has been edited and rewritten many times over the centuries...and it most certainly was NOT originally written in English.

I'm having a little trouble with your wording. Christian who pick and choose what we think should be sins. What should be sins? The christians are sin? How can you be a sin. All I can say is many atheist do know a lot about the bible. And some christians do pick and choose what are sins.

Christians are still the vast majority of society, so they're going to be pretty much average in every way.

In many cases, it takes extra study of the Bible to become an atheist, since atheism involves thinking about religion enough to make an informed decision (at least among people who actually identify as atheist). This is why you see higher levels of atheism among the more educated.

Where would the atheist be getting their knowledge of the bible from? My understanding of atheism is that their is no divine or superior being controlling anything. Faith has no place in their lives, so it would only follow that their knowledge of the bible would be non-existent. As would their belief in any god. My belief in god is my choice. As is an atheist belief that god doesn't exist. An atheist has a right to their opinion that god doesn't exist, as I have a right to believe that he does. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, as mis-guided as I feel it may be.

simple: the argument would be that the above statement is untrue because that would mean argueing that both the religious and atheists are homogeonous groups. this is a logical impossibility due on the religous side to the existence of several different religions.

or you could just say: " i met this guy oliver on the internet. hes practically atheist (agnostic) and he said that hed met religous people that knew far more about religion than him and others who knew far less."

everyone should be open to the fact that they might no know everything. no one does.

I have studied both the Bible and many other religions throughout the world extensively, but I don't think I'm in a position to compare my academic knowledge of religion with people I don't even know. I suppose as a general statement it could be true, but it isn't necessarily true.
