Typically, children under 18 don't have to show an I.D. for domestic travel within the U.S. -- although it certainly couldn't hurt to bring along his school I.D. It's worth bearing in mind, also, that each airline decides the identification requirements for kids, so you might want to contact the airline you're flying with and double-check their policy.
(By the way, I'm assuming you're flying to Reno from within the U.S. If you're not, of course -- making it an international flight -- then your son will obviously have to have a passport for identification.)
As far as meeting the captain and giving out wings, I'm sure that also depends on the airline -- as well as what sort of mood the crew are in and how full/busy/turbulent the flight is! I can tell you that I flew with American Airlines at the weekend and the flight attendant let a little seven-year-old boy come up to the front of the plane and say "hi, Mommy!" over the loudspeaker. His dad replied with "hey! What about me?"

ususally if you're under 18 they don't require you to have an i.d. i'm 17 and they said i didn't need one. bring his i.d. along with you just incase.
