that it takes effect on saturday at midnight? So if people are out on saturday in a pub or club, will they be able to smoke untill midnight then not be able to smoke past midnight (in the same venue)???

I think the ban takes effect from the early hours of the morning - it'd be a bit stupid to expect people to comply just after midnight, especially if they're half (or fully!) pissed.
Someone mentioned pubs and clubs would be able to allocate smoking sections - yeah, they're called OUTSIDE! You will not be able to smoke in any enclosed space and that includes bus shelters that have four sides - mental but true.

Hi the law comes into effect on July 1st So technically thats as soon as it turns midnight on Saturdays dont see how this is going to work in night clubs thou, Is there going to be someone going around telling people to put thier cigs out, and all the adverts say it will be illegal to light up so if you light your cig at 11:59 and dont finish till 00:05 is that ok
Its all rubish we where told if they do introduce a ban they will alow pubs and clubs to allocate smoking areas

What it means is that more people will end up quitting the habit or just add more pounds to the waist just to contain the craving.We in Albuquerque,New Mexico just enacted a such a smoking real recently, and so far all people keep talking about is how it can't be enforced all the time.I think they ought to at least modify the law in our city,as to at least allow people to smoke outside.But i still don't like breathing someones' secondhand smoke either!

we have bn smoke free in scotland for a while now
yes its from midnight but there is also a period of settling in it was about 3months in scotland that if u were caught smokin in a public area u would be givin a warnin
this was to allow ppl to get used to it
now u get an automatic fine

probably 6am sunday but it could be a good money making scheme to start at midnight.
As soon as it turns midnight they can give out thousands of fines
