Contrary to the propaganda that the government of Puerto Rico is constantly bombarding the United States with, that people in Puerto Rico don't speak English, yes, you can get by on English alone in Puerto Rico. The younger generation of puertorricans are very adept to understand English, they have grown in the era of Direct TV, which in San Juan, and even in the interior of the island, most households have, since Puertorrican TV stinks. Keep in mind that you will start to pick up phrases in Spanish as you stay longer in PR and Puertorricans are very forgiving of accents, we appreciate people trying to learn Spanish and we do not ridicule them for not speaking it perfectly. So, go to Puerto Rico and enjoy your stay.

Yes you can absolutely get by without knowing spanish.

My husband is Puerto Rican and I am white - I SPEAK NO SPANISH (when I say none - I really mean it lol). We moved to the island almost 2 years ago and I love it. Even though I don't speak spanish, most people here speak english. If you want to get by on english alone, the best places to move are by the military bases. We live near Ramey base and everyone here speaks english (everyone). Many of the people out this way aren't Puerto Rican either, they are white.

So, close to bases is the best place to stay. Whether Ft. Buchanan in San Juan (but it's pricey to live in the metro area) or La Arena Naval Base or Ramey Base in Aguadilla - all these places are ideal for not speaking spanish. ♥

Dear friend,
I live here and I can said to you don't worry about the language. More that the 60% of people speak a perfect english (with our accent) and other 20% speak no so perfect. Remeber all our TV system is cable or satelite TV, all our privetes schools teach a very good english to our kids (many of them use english as their official language). The best place to stay depends on what you are going to do here (profesion). Good Luck.

I used to be born right here, I left, got here again, left, got here again once more to conclude my son's schooling at an ivy league university prep tuition wherein all my household used to be proficient. There are 2 phrases that can be utilized to explain Puerto Rico to a tee: "Controlled chaos."

In cities English will do. In rural areas or for the most enjoyment of restaurants and stores you need Spanish.

One problem that people who have grown up there always complain about is the fact that it is an island and they feel confined. They always want to go visit someplace off island just to avoid that "prison" sense.
