Ah ok. So why do Christians (obviously not everyone) think its the end of the world?

The thing is, the Mayan Calendar ends then, but it also begins. This is like people worrying the world will end on December 31st because that's the last sheet on their calendar.

It's the year that the old Mayan calendar happens to end, which has made people think that the end of the world will come.
Just as how the end of the world was "supposed to" come in the year 2000, 1998, 1975, 1923, 1666, 1000, 30...

It is the the date in which the Mayan Calander ends on December 21, 2012 many people think this is the end of the world!

The current cycle of the Mayan calendar ends 12/21/2012. There is no accompanying prophecy of the apocalypse. We simply enter a new cycle (actually, we start an existing cycle again). Basically, it is something that has been blown out of proportion and exaggerated. From what I understand, however, the upcoming cycle is not necessarily the best one and the Mayans believed these cycles essentially repeat themselves. You could get some "prophecy" of less than appealing times out of that.

it is the date that nostradamus and the mayans predicted for the end of the world. St. Malachi's prophecies of the popes also ends with the pope after this one. 2012 is a reasonable date for a new pope. St. Malachi also says that the seven-hilled city, Rome will be destroyed in the reign of the next pope.
The Mayans calendar also ends in this year. The Mayans believed that the earth went in cycles of birth and death. They predicted that the current cycle will end in 2012.

I'm pretty sure that Christians don't think the world is going to end that day, it is some other religion (I think) that I can not recall right now.

Sweety, not even reading previous answers - you can interpert it as a 'Death' card in a Tarot - the end, or
imho - a new beginning :)
heck, thats what they've said on Discovery chann. - a new beginning LOL
not a Mayan, so, can't answer from their perspective
And, as far as I know from science - will be a while before this civilization ends :))
