I'll start from the beginning: We(I and my parents)have three boxers; a father a son, and a daughter. Now, the female puppy just had her first heat, and I tried to tell my mother to separate the dogs, but she only listened after she found the father and daughter stuck together. So, I'm pretty sure we are going to have inbred puppies. But that's not the worst part. Last weekend, my mom took the dogs to get their shots. I told her that it would be harmful to any puppies that Cleo might be having, but she didn't tell the vet, and Cleo got her shots anyway. So, not only could the puppies be retarted because they're inbred, but their imune systems could be messed up now, and the mother is too immature to have pups. My mom won't pay for an abortion, and I dont know what to do. Weve dealt with one of our boxers being pregnant before, but never like this. What do I do? Please dont call me a backyard breeder.Im only thirteen, and I tried to stop this from happening

I need all the birthing advice I can get, plus anything I might need to know about the puppies' development. I am pretty certain that Cleo is pregnant. Her nipples are enlarged along with her vagina, but she had yet to gain weight or fill with milk. I am also certain that if she is pregnant, she will be having the puppies, whether she is too immature or the puppies have immunity problems. So, I need to know what to look for in her from now until she gives birth, and how to make her as comfortable as I can. I'm doing this basically alone, but I'm a smart kid, so if you can give me any advice, I'd appreciate it. Oh, I'm also fuzzy on what date she got tied on, so I don't know how far along she is or what week to be checking her temp.

Hey look, It's not like I could separate them myself because I had nowhere to put the female but in the house, and think of how well that would have gone over with my parents! I have called the vet, and it's not like I can take her up there people! I'm only thirteen! My mother won't listen to me when I try to bring up the subject of Cleo being pregnant, so I need websites or something that can help me undeerstand what to look for in the growth of the puppies and the mother's behavior. Thankx

I feel sorry for you, you seem to be smarter than your parents and isn't that just so ANNOYING! It sucks being young!
It's essential you impart some of your sense on to your parents, but as I don't know your parents I don't know how. If it was me I think I'd march right up to them and say something bold that they can't ignore like 'you're hurting our dogs by letting this happen and if you don't help me sort this situation out now we could end up having our dogs taken off us by animal control'.
Now for the advice you wanted - it's best to pick up the phone and give a vet a call, for advice you can trust. They can give you advice over the phone and they won't charge you for that of course. This is too much to do on your own really - the mother dog may end up needing help with the birth, say if any of the pups get stuck, and being 13 you won't be able to get her the help she might need, as you realise. Is there any adult at all you can get on your side to help? Perhaps if you found a really caring vet, or even just another adult in your family? I feel really sorry for you, I'd be ripping my hair out.
Email me if I can help more. Just so you know - the puppies won't DEFINITELY be born in a mess - vaccines aren't always harmful, and one generation of inbreeding doesn't always cause problems. I'm not saying everything will be fine, but it's not definite it will be awful.

I read this yesterday and didn't have time to reply, but I was touched by you dedication to help the dogs. It looks like you are the only one in your family that is acting like an adult and that is sad as you are only 13.
This is not your fault so don't listen to those who have suggested that it is in any way it is all your parents fault.
If you have not already can you go to the library and get some reading material on the birthing of dogs I am sorry I wouldn't know what to tell you.
Also as the others have suggested see if you can get another trusted adult to take you to a vet or some shelters have vet services for a small donation that someone you can trust might pay. Your vet will be able to direct you where you can go if you find someone to take you since you are a minor you will need an adult to sign the paper work and make the payment so you are stuck in a hard place.
I hope things work out for you

Neuter the males. Spay the female after the pups. The puppies may be just fine. Inbreeding is NOT a good idea, but the puppies are not guaranteed to have problems either.
Also FYI, if you a mismating occurs if you tell the vet right away I believe there is a morning after shot or pill. Even now you may be able to abort the litter. Aborting is cheaper than having the puppies, let your mom know that.

If your puppy has puppies she could be at risk. Your vet needs to be able to talk to your mom about this. You could lose the female and the puppies if things go wrong.
I'm sorry your mom seems so clueless about the dogs. But sometimes saving money is the way to get to a parent. So talk to the vet and then have him talk to your mom.
And no you aren't a BYB, your mom is.

Yes, it may mess their systems up. Other thing may be that they are not retarded but will be fragile. How old is your dog?
If she is less than 4 years old, then maybe you will have to help her feed them, etc.
Why didn't your mom put any attetion to what you said? If you had gone, you should go and ask a lot more.
All right, you aren't a backyard breeder. Ask your vet how much would it be to have an abortion on your dog. The cost usually varies from place to place- Where I live(Europe) we have to spend about 250 euros. Its pretty expensive.
Other thing you could do is ask your vet if its allright to have the pets taken to him. He may take care of them, and later sell them.
Please, go and see if she's really pregnant. Also give your dog some more calcium, rice may help. Also meatballs.
If you will be having the puppies, then it will need a lot of responsibility on your part. You will have to feed the puppies, and stimulate them, give them a small wash, etc. due to the fact that the mom-to-be may not be ready.
If you can't do this, then you should talk to the vet about all this. He will find out something to get out of all of this. I can't help you much, your vet may think differently, or may have other opinions that differ from the way I treat them. I don't know.

If your mom has the dogs she should be responsible for the dogs anyway you look at it, She is not a responsible dog owner let along a responsible breeder.. I understand you have tried to help the situation, but, why didn't you seperate the dogs if you knew better? the other thing I would call the vet and ask them what can be done at this point I see your mom doesn't really care about your dogs and it is good that you do.. again call the vet and ask them for sugestions, let them know the postion you are in, and what is going on. Most vets and assistants are more than helpful!!

1st...the dogs won't be retarded or deformed so don't worry. Dogs (and all animals for that matter) mate with their off-spring all the time. The only issues would be inherited health issues like hip dysplasia etc. 2nd...call the vet. It won't cost anything and they'd be able to answer the question about the shots. My thinking is that nature will take it's course. If the puppies were harmed by the shots then Cleo will mis-carry --aka natural abortion. Otherwise, they are probably fine and you should spend the next few months looking for good homes for the pups!

I feel sooo sorry for you! I'm in almost the same position! my cat is sick and my stepdad rather have him die in this house rather than giving a second chance at life by giving him up to the animal shelter. http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070627125157AAfmSnT&r=w
just remember you're not alone when it comes to these problems. My parents are jerks too, and they think I know nothing. Inbreeding is not that bad for dogs as you think, and they wont become retarded. Professional breeders do it all the time to keep the genetic line the same. However, the shots... that will mess them up. All you can do is hope for the best. I suggest you get "Breeding Dogs For Dumbies", a book i had to buy when I though my dog was pregnant with her own brother, but she actually had a false pregnancy. Your dog might be having one too, but buy this book, once she has her puppies get her fixed, and then fix your other dogs. I know its harder than it sounds, because i totally understand. I'm only 14 :-/

You need to tell your vet exactly what has happened. He or she will make the best decision about what to do. Personally, I would not be bringing inbred puppies into the world. That would be terribly irresponsible and the blame would be placed on your mother and not you as she is the adult. If your mother is embarrassed or ashamed about taking her to the vets, please do try talking some sense into her. With all the dogs that are PTS needlessly in shelters every day we do not need more inbred puppies in the world.
Also, please get your dogs neutered ASAP and you female spayed as soon as this situation is resolved. Intact males and females must NEVER be kept together and this is why.
Good luck.

When you abort the puppies, it is about a 50/50 chance that the shot will kill the mother dog as well. It will be best for her to have the pups unless the vet spays her as well. The shots for the dog shouldn't have any affect on the puppies. The worst part is that they are inbred, and there is nothing that you can do about that now.

You are in a bad situation. Your parents are the ones that need to do something about this. They really do need to tell the vet about this. That dog is way too young to be having pups. Do you have any clue about how long ago they were tied? when she is about 5 weeks pregnant she will really start to put on weight and show. Just keep an eye on her and remember they are only pregnant for about 9 weeks.
